Michigan has outdoor adventure, magnificent metro areas, gorgeous Great Lakes scenery - in short, it's perfect for weddings! WeddingWire is a great platform to launch your Michigan wedding celebration. Let's take a tour of the state, and also discuss weather considerations, music & catering, Michigan wedding costs and more.
Detroit is by far the largest Michigan city, so it has the most wedding venues and the most extensive wedding service choices. Besides its sheer size, Detroit is also home to Motown - the most iconic genre of 20th century American music - and also some stunning lakeside views, especially in the summer. Detroit is the headquarters of choice for many Michigan wedding planners, and for good reason. The Detroit metro area contains a big portion of Michigan's total population, including cities like Dearborn, Livonia and Warren. Head due west of Motown, and you'll run right into one of the most quintessential college towns in the United States: Ann Arbor. This is the home of the University of Michigan, so Ann Arbor is the perfect place for U of M alums to "come home" for an unforgettable Michigan wedding experience. Flint, Lansing and Grand Rapids all boast populations of over 100,000 people, so wedding celebrations here are quite common and easy to plan with such an abundance of amenities available. Michigan's Upper Peninsula (also called the U.P.) is accessible by crossing the majestic Mackinac Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the world, standing upwards of 550 feet. The Upper Peninsula has idyllic lakeside towns, friendly locals and rolling hills, especially in the northern portion. Plus, the U.P. has shorelines with three of America's most famous bodies of water: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
So what's the weather situation in the Wolverine State? In a word, variable. Upper Peninsula winters are legendary for their ferocity, but spring celebrations in the U.P. are a complete 180-degree turn: pleasant breezes, steady doses of sunshine, and affordable Michigan wedding venues to boot. You should also keep this in mind about outdoor Michigan weddings: the state has nearly 65,000 lakes and ponds, along with endless miles of Great Lakes coastline. Another interesting fact: no matter where you are in Michigan, a natural body of water is about five miles away, at most! And that means summer and autumn weddings trend toward ultra-humid. If you're set on a summer outdoor wedding, cooling stations, fans and air-conditioned indoor areas will provide relief from the stifling heat and humidity. Michigan's state flower, the apple blossom, features a lovely pink and white tapestry, and Michigan wedding planners will use those colors quite frequently in the spring and summer. Winter celebrations tend to work well with dark greens (a nod to the Eastern White Pine, the state tree), emeralds, reds and other deep tones. Create your own Michigan wedding color combination with the surrounding area in mind and you can't go wrong!
Good news for Michigan wedding planners: matrimony expenses in the Great Lakes State are less than the national average, by approximately 10-15%. With 140 guests, Detroit weddings come in just under $26,000 (about $185 per guest) and Lansing / Grand Rapids weddings cost just over $20,000 (about $145 per guest). U.P. weddings are even more affordable, so give strong consideration to the north part of the state, if you'd like to see your wedding costs go south! Wedding reception music is heavily influenced by the soulful sounds of Motown, especially with DJs in Detroit. For catering options, smaller towns like Ann Arbor have their own "foodie culture," with creative dishes reflected in the catering choices. If you require Detroit wedding planners with local know-how, Michigan fortunately has tons of terrific possibilities.
A Michigan marriage license is a reasonable $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents. County clerk offices issue each marriage license, and applicants must apply in person with valid identifications. One curious quirk to Michigan's marriage law is a newly-issued marriage license's valid period; most states have a 30-day window for applicants to get married, but Michigan allows 33 days - perhaps because state lawmakers know how many great wedding options the state has to offer!
