Janell M. Hickman-Kirby was raised in Minnetonka, Minnesota and moved to New York to intern at WWD. She has held editorial positions at publications such as Essence, Ebony, GILT, and BET. She is currently a freelance communication strategist, copywriter, and beauty editor, focusing on branding and strategy. She enjoys figure skating, cooking, visiting art museums, and creating budgets (weird, she knows!) in her free time.

For over a decade, Janell has worked in the fashion and beauty industry. Her experience in PR, marketing, and editorial gives her a unique perspective. She’s held roles at Victoria’s Secret, Essence, HL Group, Ebony, GILT, and BET.

Janell is also a freelance writer, whose work has appeared in both print and digital publications, such as BRIDES, Cosmopolitan, O, The Oprah Magazine; ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar, Refinery 29, Coveteur, Well + Good, Allure, Doré, Marie Claire, and others. Janell is a proud HBCU alum and Hampton University graduate, with degrees in Print Journalism and Marketing. In college, she interned at the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, Norfolk Botanical Garden, and WWD.
