DANCING IN YOUR STARS?
First Dance. Just two little words but they can strike fear in the heart of a normally easy-going groom. We’ve all seen the TV shows… spinning women, gyrating men, lifts, fast footwork and romantic poses. No problem, right? The wedding’s a couple months away.
Well, let’s be reasonable. What’s the point of the first dance anyway? For the majority of my brides and grooms it is the first thing they undertake as a couple after becoming husband and wife. It’s a spiritual moment of looking into each other’s eyes, hearing a favorite tune, and affirming in front of all the friends and family that two have become one.
When working with couples to create the first dance of their dreams I take into account the wishes of the couple (both bride and groom), the time allotted and their willingness to practice. If my couple already dances and they’ve just got to wow with something that’s wild and crazy that’s one thing. If they’ve never danced but they don’t want to just sway back and forth like a high school prom that’s another.
The song chosen is really the biggest key to your dance. Want to showcase your lightheartedness and fun as a couple? Make it a Swing or Foxtrot. Romantic and symbiotic? Try a Rumba or an Argentine Tango. Old fashioned and ok with a little practice? Choose a Viennese Waltz or Country 2-Step. Modern and eclectic? Order up a sexy Salsa or a crazy Cha Cha.
No matter what your first dance needs there are dances that are right for you and the song you’ve chosen. Remember the internet is a great tool for looking up songs, researching studios and instructors and watching YouTube for ideas.
Current songs my couples have used include:
“Because You Love Me”
“Home”
“Fever”
“Can’t Help Falling In Love”
“The Wonderful World of the Young”
“I’ll Stand By You”
“Diggin Me”
“This I Promise You”
“L-O-V-E (French Version)
“Just In Time”
“Sexy Love”
“You Made Me So Very Happy”
