My name is Brenda Boorman. I am a Professional Full Service Wedding and Event Planner and “Director of Romantic Memories”.
 
My company, “A Heart to Heart Wedding Consultant” is based in San Luis Obispo, California. I have planned and coordinated events from 10 to 300 and assisted brides and grooms throughout Northern, Southern, and Central California and the Caribbean.

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN HIRING A WEDDING COORDINATOR

How much wedding experience do you have?

There is more to this question than asking “how many weddings have you done?” Many people will claim they have event planning experience, however planning a corporate event or party is very different from planning a wedding. Anyone who tells you that since planning their own wedding they decided to start the business is probably not a good sign. Although planning their own wedding was fun planning someone else’s is not an easy task.
It is also good to ask about their education and if they belong to any associations relevant to their profession as a wedding coordinator or planner.

How do your services work?

Depending on what service you choose ask the coordinator to review the entire process including the “day of” to make sure you are clear of what she is doing for you. There are a lot of misconceptions out there about what a wedding coordinator does and doesn’t do, so ask questions if you are not sure. This is what the consultation is for.

How do you charge your fees?

Wedding coordinators or planners may charge by the hour, a flat rate, percentage of the wedding budget or by doing an estimate of their time.

Do you receive referral fees from vendors?

Many years ago this may have been okay however times have changed and accepting referral fees (also known as “kick backs”) is now deemed unethical. Since the bride and groom are your client payment should come from your client only.

What other services do you offer?

Some coordinators may offer other wedding services that may seem like you are getting a better deal or killing two birds with one stone, but keep in mind that this is not necessarily true. It is best to leave details such as floral, décor, etc., to the professionals who specialize in this field. You coordinator already has much to do with making sure all of these vendors and your other details are kept organized and completed in a timely manner.

What is your emergency procedure?

Having a back up coordinator is important, but also make sure that this back up possess the same skill level as your actual coordinator. You don’t want an assistant coordinating your day for the fee of a professional coordinator.

How many weddings do you coordinate per day or weekend?

There are many details to remember and coordination for just one wedding alone is best. Go with someone who will devote their time and attention to your day and your day only.
