Aribella Martin received a letter from her young suitor, written December 22, 1815. "My Dear Aribella," the letter begins, "I hope the time will come when we shall see each other face to face without the mediums of pen and ink..." As Aribella is my grandmother’s great-grandmother, I have now been charged with the care of this frail and faded letter, which captures my imagination and stirs the eternal romantic in me. I don’t know who the young man was, I may never find an image of he and Aribella on their wedding day or know the “rest of the story” - but I know there was love. I know this letter meant enough to her that it was passed safely down the family line thru events that shaped our country and even the world, from before The Civil War, thru both World War I and World War II, even the current wars in the Middle East and beyond - and yet this story, this legacy of their love story, remains.

In many ways, I consider the honor of joining you in planning your wedding as rare and intimate a gift as caring for Aribella’s letter. Tremendous care must be taken to listen attentively, particularly to that which goes unspoken. To fully “get” you as individuals and as a couple.
