I will be getting married a year from today. Is it too soon to begin shopping for my dress and bridesmaides?
I have exactly a year from today and I need to start planning everything now. I would like to know if anyone thinks its too soon to start planning my wedding and if its too soon to start shopping for my dress as well as my bridesmides dresses.

my wedding is in june 2011. i dont think its too soon to start planning. we were engaged and set a date 2 years away due to saving and planning. they say you should start looking for a dress 8 months ahead but for me since i started ahead of time i feel im more relaxed and getting things done slowly and to the way i want. the only down side to getting a dress sooner is that you cant gain any weight, but you can have the dress and wait to get it fitted.my main goal was dress and then ceremony and reception place. i then got the photographer lined up.im one of those diy brides so im glad to have the main stuff worked out so i can have time for the details.hope ive helped

Hi Yolanda, Congratulations! Some of the biggest stress comes from waiting till the last minute and then worrying that the dresses won't come in on time. Why don't you start looking now? If you don't find anything you love then you have plenty of time to revisit the stores and see what new stuff they have. If you have an idea in mind this also gives them the opportunity to try to get a dress in that you might like and will also give you and them time to order it. Once you know the main place you will be getting married and having the reception, that will give you a better guide to what kind of dress you need. Some things to keep in mind, having a reception outside will get the train dirty, opt for a shorter dress! Try not to let anyone tell you what kind of dress you need, when you find it You'll know!! Good Luck, and come visit if you're in the area. Mary Beth

We are actively booking for Chicago weddings for 2011, including December of 2011. One thing to remember is that careful planning well ahead of your event date ensures that you get first choice of the vendors, i.e. DJs, venues, photographers, etc that you like and want. Nothing is worse than loving something and not being able to have it because it's already taken. So, no it's certainly not too early to start lining things up. Believe me, your wedding date will be upon you before you know it! Let us know if we can be of service!

Congrats Yolanda! I am going through the same thing! I finally realized that the more I look at dresses/flowers...etc the less stressful it will be in the long run. Go ahead! Look around and get a final idea on what you want at your wedding! Goodluck and have fun!

I'd say yes. A lot can happen in a year & the least amount of time till the wedding means the least amount of weight that can be gained & such. I'd hate for you to buy them now & have to get tons of alterations done. It can get expensive. I say wait until atleast 6 months prior to the wedding.

My wedding is over a year away. I just put the deposit on my dress a few weeks ago (because they thought it might be discontinued). I would say, if you want to get a good head start, so that you aren't rushing around later, go shopping. But put serious thought and consideration into when you buy your dress. As STB Mrs. Congiardo said, the further out you are, the more likely something will change. Every bridal salon I've gone to has suggested 8 months out to buy your dress, because it's supposed to take about 6 months to come in and then you need time for alterations.

If I were you, I would get out there and look. If you find something you love, it will almost absolutely still be there four months from now when you "should" be ordering. I think its great to go looking when there isn't the pressure to find something NOW. You won't feel like you need to settle on something that you see the first day. You can always look somewhere else or come back later to look again.

It's never too early!!! Have fun and a word of advice . . . tell them your wedding day is earlier that what it actually is! One of my brides had the company keep telling her it was still coming still coming because they knew there would be a lot of alterations and so we had to demand they ship it! Cushion it at least 2 weeks : )

Congratulations!!!

My daughter just got engaged 8/8/10, and its never too early to shop! We just went 1 week ago and she picked hers and I picked mine, and yes they did convince sort of, that they discontinue dresses all the time. If it's the dress you love the most it would be the same no matter what happens over the year to come. Now for the bridesmaid's it could get a little time consuming, my daughter has 9 to work with, 9 different bodies. Congrats to you and good luck!
