I was reading my new issue of my mystery magazine and read about a bride who had a 6 day engagement!
All I thought was, “wow! We could never do it that quickly!” Thank God for my long engagement!
As I mentioned in my post “Two Brides” my sister is also getting married. As her wedding date draws closer I can’t help but be amazed at everything she’s pulled together since January!
Not for me though. We’re celebrating one year of engagement (take that Mrs. 6 Days Engaged)! This has been one of the best years of my life. Being engaged is exciting and stressful all at the same time. For 12 solid months I’ve been able to call myself a bride… and I have 8 more months of it left.
When Lilac Dude and I set our wedding date we had conflicting reactions. The first question was, why so long? We believed that it was wise for us to wait until we finished our undergrad degrees. After graduation it’s a whole new journey, so why not go on it as husband and wife? Finishing college is the main reason for having such a long engagement. Surprisingly the other question was, why not wait longer? We’re young and Lilac Dude wants to go to law school, so this question made perfect sense. But no, when we wed we will have been a couple for nearly 5 years I have no desire to wait another 3 to 4 years to marry the man of my dreams. Since Lilac Dude’s top choices are outside of Ohio I feel that it’s better for us to be married before making the move to be away from our families.
With all of that being said, I love my long engagement! I found my dress early but some things were more difficult to figure out so the time was helpful. And since we are both fulltime students and we both have jobs, those things don’t leave much free time for wedding planning. It’s nice that we can tackle things one step at a time.
What were the factors in how long of an engagement you had?
