About

Thanks for your interest in Sara Mazer Photography!  I am an experienced wedding photographer who covers the Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, Maryland, and southern Pennsylvania area.  I specialize in weddings and do this as a full time career.  My style is primarily photojournalistic, however, I also do about 45 minutes of formals as requested.  I am the type of photographer that hopes you do not notice me.  I prefer to take photographs from afar with a telescopic lens to capture your most natural moments.  I like to meet with you beforehand to talk about what sort of photographs you like, show you my portfolio, and hope you find me a good match.  I love looking at pictures you might bring with you from magazines and will try to capture or recreate any you are interested in.  I also do not mind working with lists of desired shots and will try to accommodate you to your hearts content!  My first career was in computer engineering, and I am very handy with Photoshop.  Unlike most other photographers, I do simple editing for free.  In addition to the standard color correction and cropping, I routinely edit out blemishes and wrinkles so your skin looks perfect (for brides, grooms, and guests!)  I also do creative editing such as mixing black and white and color, motion blurring, vignetting, and blurring out backgrounds, for free, to give you special photographs to keep that look like no one else’s.  I can even do more extensive editing, such as double chin removal, tummy tucks, replacing heads/merging photos, or even creating a canvas oil painting upon special request.  You may of course have all the simple originals in color or in black and white as well!  I also do not force you to purchase a package of any sort.  I have a flat fee for my time and that is it.  You can then view and order prints online, order an album, or purchase the entire wedding set on DVD as desired.  I love this career and sharing the most happiest times with people and their families.  I truly believe you can see this in my work and the time I put into every photograph.  Congratulations on your engagement and I hope to meet you soon.  Best regards, Sara.

Frequently Asked Questions for Photography
Do you offer special techniques such as hand-coloring or toning?
I shoot digital raw. I have special software that allows me to do everything from removing double chins, giving tummy tucks, opening eyes, removing noise, perfecting skin tones, and removing all blemishes (blemish editing is standard and free). I can not only change photographs from color to black and white, I can make several different versions of black and whites (or sepias) in which the contrast between elements in the photograph vary greatly. I can make photographs black and white, with just the bouquet in color. I can create an oil painting of a photograph by painting by hand (my brush is electronic over a tablet, but every stroke is by hand). Finally, I can even make a David Burns-like DVD movie of your wedding with narration and music.

I have experience with all lighting conditions and more importantly, all the equipment necessary for any situation at a moment's notice.

Additional Questions and Answers

All my pricing for individual prints and other gifts (t-shirts, mugs, mousepads, coffee mugs, canvas prints) are already online.  Some people have trouble finding the prices.  A 4x6 runs about $8.00 and an 8x10 runs $18.50.  You can actually select any photograph on my website, add it to your cart, the view the cart.  At that point, you can use the drop down menus to see all your options and pricing.

Sometimes photographers second shoot for others and can not put their pictures on the internet but can put them in their portfolio.  I highly recommend meeting me in person and viewing my complete portfolio!

I do not usually go over the Bay Bridge during peak summer months, but travel just about anywhere else throughout MD, Southern PA, Northern VA, and DC.  If you really want me to go to the East Bay or fly out somewhere, you can talk me into it as long as you pay for my expenses!

Tips and Advice

Here are some words of wisdom to help you on your wedding day:

I recommend you select a wedding time which allows for pictures just before the sun sets.  That is the best time for natural lighting.  Most people do pictures after the wedding, but if you do not mind seeing the groom ahead of time, you can do them before.  Just leave at least 45 minutes for the group pictures.

Sometimes the church or person doing the wedding does not allow flash during the ceremony.  Often, you can negotiate with them to allow for flash, or better yet, have an outdoor ceremony.  Flash is not necessary for great pictures.  However it does stop motion the best, so it does reduce the risk of getting slightly blurred photos if things are happening fast.

Do you want to add a little color?  I think the new trend in wedding dresses is a touch of color, like a sash around the waist.  Don't worry about the look being dated years from now, because everything can be Photoshopped out and/or easily converted to black and white.  I personally like a little color in the bouquet, so that I can do a black and white photograph with just the bouquet in color.

Some photographers don't like working with lists of desired shots, poses, and groups of people.  I don't mind lists and would be happy to oblige.  However, please note that if you do have a list, a wedding coordinator really comes in handy so that he/she can gather the right people for each photograph you want.
