Sisters Susan and Valerie started Artistic Veil Design Studio in order to provide the highest quality hand-sewn veils available. They had wanted to go into business together for many years and realized their dream in 2007.

Susan, the primary designer, has a degree in Fashion Design from The International Academy of Design & Technology with a concentration in Bridal Fashion and has been making and altering bridal gowns and accessories for years.

Valerie, who also enjoys writing and illustrating children’s books, is the business end of the team and manages to do some designing of her own. The studio where they brainstorm their designs is in Port Charlotte, Florida.

They enjoy their creative freedom with designs from the traditional to the modern bubble and cage styles. Any design challenge is gladly accepted. The fun and joy of working together is reflected in the quality and style of the veils they produce.

Artistic Veil is the perfect place to discover all the possibilities there are for veils and hair accessories. The designers work with each bride and wedding party to select the veil that reflects the brides taste and style. They specialize in the design and production so that every detail can be unique and different. They also offer unique, custom made accessories. For the local bride they can also offer their in-house alteration service to solve any design dilemma with their attention to detail and creative style. I would recommend this Studio to anyone who is interested in that personal touch to create a unique, one-of-a-kind design.

Does a client need to schedule an appointment? How do the client appointments work?
Yes. Because Artistic Veil is a working design studio, rather than a retail shop, we really don't have fixed hours. Being the "artsy" type, I work best when inspired, and that can be at very odd hours. I will do all I can to meet with you when it is best for you - I will warn you though, I am NOT at my best in the early morning.

What is the typical turn-around time for a dress?
This depends on what is being done - On alterations and custom work contact me as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. The more I know about what you require the easier it will be to estimate time involved. Most veils deliver in 2-3 weeks. If you need a rush please ask I will accomodate where possible. Headpieces: If I have it already completed I will ship when payment is received.

Do you provide any guarantees/warrantees of any kind?
My goal is and has always been a happy bride. I will work with you to realize your vision on custom work, but I will tell you when I think an idea will not work.

Do you have a seamstress onsite?
Yes. I have been a seamstress for many years - Mom put me in front of the sewing machine when I was six. I have a degree in fashion design and have been working in the bridal industry in one way or another for 30 years. I have many years of experience in bridal alterations and will meet with local brides and those willing to travel to my studio.

In addition to wedding dresses, what other products do you sell?
Artistic Veil has a full sample line of bridal veils. In addition we offer custom work: lengths and trims may be personalized - I will use your lace for example. We offer embroidery, beading - if you give me a line drawing it can be put on your veil. We have a line of Hair Combs, Fascinators and Veil Bustlers (TM). Most are one of a kind (OOAK) due to the natural materials used (feathers, shells etc.). I will duplicate a piece as close as possible. If you have a sentimental item and want it worked into one of our pieces - ask. It can be most anything - shell, jewelry, a bit of lace from a family item. I will also be introducing "barefoot sandles" in the near future - if you are looking for them now please contact me. If you need something made, ask, I will entertain all serious inquiries.

Tips and Advice
Time permitting I will add tips as I think of them.  If you have any specific questions relating to alterations please ask and I will help when possible.  Contact me through Wedding Wire I usually check this site at lease once a day.

Fitting a Strapless gown

When you have your first bridal gown fitting make sure the seamstress fits the dress to your waist.  I have found over many years of doing bridal alterations that if a strapless gown fits in the waist you will not be tugging and pulling it up all through the reception - it also eliminates the "bulgies" at the top. Many seamstresses try to make the adjustment at the top of the gown and it never works - no matter how tight you make it at the top of the gown.  Unless it is fitted properly at the waist it will always feel like it is slipping. Let your waist carry the weight of the gown. If need be have your seamstress put in a waist stay( also called a "seat belt" by some) it is a 3" wide length of elastic(roughly 2" less than your waist measurement). When I make them I use a 5 hook bra closure and it is very secure.  It is attached to the inside of the dress with short thread chains.

Tying a Corsett back gown

If you have a gown with a corsett back you can do the same thing by making the ties tightest at the waist.  It takes a little longer to tie but the result is worth it.  Position the dress at the waist and use a temporary tie to hold it in place.  Lace the top snugly down to the waist where it should be the tightest.  Finish lacing to the end and then remove the temporary tie.  You can lace the dress without the temporary tie but using it saves someone holding the dress in place while another laces it up.  If you are using the modesty panel have your seamstress add an extra skirt hook at the waist and you won't need the temporary tie.
