Ten Tips for Working with Your Wedding Planner
by Cheryl Markham
It is important to hire a wedding planner who understands what you want and can offer their expertise to help you have the wedding of your dreams. The most important tip I can give you is simple – Enjoy the experience. But, here are 10 more to make planning your wedding a breeze.
1. WORK TOGETHER – Make a list of what you want to handle yourself and give it to your planner. Concentrate your energies on your dress, gifts for your attendants, and de-stressing. If it is in the contract you have with your planner, let them do it. Your planner can save you money on purchasing favor items, aisle runners, invitations, etc. Check with them before you buy things because they may have already purchased it for you. That’s why you’re paying a planner after all!
2. USE EVERY FORM OF COMMUNICATION POSSIBLE – You may not be able to spend a lot of time together so take advantage of e-mail, texting, IM’s, phone and even snail mail. Don’t wait until you visit to show your planner your thoughts and ideas. Be sure that your planner has an “unlimited” communication policy.
3. BUDGET, BUDGET, BUDGET- Ask your planner how they will keep you on budget. If they work on a percentage of your budget for their fee, how will they assure you that they will not drive the budget up to increase their fee? Also, remember things may be more expensive for you and your guests because of added hotel and travel costs. Your planner should set your budget realistically for the area. If it is more than you anticipated, you can work together to prioritize and look for ways to save money.
4. LET GO – Understand that you will not be able to control all the details and that’s why you hired them. It is essential that there is a certain amount of trust between you. Trust that they have your best interest in mind and want you to be thrilled with everything on your wedding day. Give them a chance to show you what can be done with a wedding. Remember they know the area, the vendors and what it will really cost to have your dream wedding in the venue you have chosen.
5. STAY AWAY FROM PACKAGE DEALS – It is important that the contract you have with your wedding planner is suited to your needs. Always remember the “It never hurts to ask” rule. Ask them to let you eliminate something you don’t need or want and add something you really need, such as more consulting time. Avoid a package that says you are limited to a certain number of hours consultation.
6. EXPERIENCE MATTERS Your planner should be an expert in the unique planning involved in a wedding. It is essential that you are comfortable with their level of expertise. They should provide you with a form or forms that obtain information about you, your ideas including a floral and photography planner.
7. PLAN APPOINTMENTS DURING THE PLANNING PROCESS. Your planner should set up appointments for you to meet with, at a minimum, the florist, the bakery and the caterer. Walk through the venue and show him/her what your vision is of what it will look like on your wedding day. This is a good time to finalize your plans and work out all the details such as the getaway, the centerpieces, the dances, and transportation needs.
8. LOCAL LAWS - Be sure you and your planner know the local laws. For example, beach weddings are not actually allowed in the city of Myrtle Beach. That doesn’t mean you can’t get married on the beach in the area. Your planner should be able to tell you if what you want is possible. They should also provide you with details on obtaining a marriage license and the rules involved.
9. AREA CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS - Your wedding planner should be able to give you advice on local customs. Your guests may have traveled far and would love to experience the unique cuisine and culture of the area. For example, incorporating “Low Country” fare into your menu and Shag music into your reception are a great way to capture the spirit of the Grand Strand. Don’t be afraid to incorporate an experience for your guests into your reception – make it something they will never forget!
10. VENUES – There are so many great places to get married and have a reception in the Myrtle Beach area. From seaside castles to plantations to ocean views, you can be sure to find the perfect place for your wedding experience. Ask your planner to recommend at least three locations for you to visit and be sure they know the requirements of each. Be sure to look at any hidden costs because of “rules” they may have such as requiring you to use a particular caterer or rental company that may be more expensive than one you might choose yourself.
