Just engaged? Congrats! Now it’s time to spread the word to your nearest and dearest and let them share in your happy news. If you’re wondering about all the different ways to announce your engagement, there are lots of options. Of course, it’s most important to tell your closest loved ones first, then you can go ahead and spread the word to everyone in your circle.

Here are the top ways to announce your engagement.

Tell your VIPs right away.

The question has been popped, you’ve said yes, the ring is firmly placed on your finger, now what? Take a few private moments to revel in the joy, then pick up the phone and start dialing! You’ll want to let the most important people in your life know as soon as possible, usually that means parents, siblings, and close family members and friends. These days, many couples are incorporating loved ones in the actual proposal (or hosting a surprise “proposal party” moments after the question is popped)—so you may actually be able to share the news with your nearest and dearest in person!

Share the news on social media.

It’s the modern day equivalent of “shouting it from the rooftops” when it comes to ways to announce your engagement. After you’ve called your nearest and dearest, take to your social media platform of choice to share a photo and your engagement story with the world. Instagram is the most popular platform to use, and it’s definitely worth posting your engagement announcement in your feed, rather than just including in your story. Whether you’re posting on Instagram, Facebook, or a different platform, we recommend keeping your post short and sweet and saving all the details for your wedding website (we’ll get to that in a minute). Once you’ve posted, sit back and watch the congratulatory likes and comments roll in!

Throw a party.

Your family members or friends may want to throw you an engagement party to officially announce and celebrate your engagement. This is a great (but definitely optional) way to get your two families together in a happy setting – especially if they haven’t formally met yet. Engagement parties tend to be casual events that can be intimate or huge—just be sure that everyone who’s invited is also on the wedding guest list.

Create a wedding website.

While sharing every detail of your proposal on social media is kind of a no-no, you can totally go all out on your wedding website. Your wedding website is a great space to share your entire proposal story with your family members and friends. Even if you don’t have many wedding details set quite yet, it’s a good idea to start working on your wedding website as a placeholder—later on, you’ll be able to add date, time, location, travel information, and much more. Just be sure to only share your wedding website address with those who are actually invited to the wedding.

Plan an engagement photo shoot.

One of our favorite ways to announce your engagement is with photography. Many couples nowadays hire a professional photographer to capture their proposal. If you didn’t, you may want to schedule your engagement photo shoot for early on in your engagement, rather than waiting until a few months before your big day. Be sure to do your research when looking for a photographer to capture these important photos—read reviews on a site like WeddingWire to find the best of the best. You can use your engagement photos to create printed engagement announcements or to use on your wedding website. We love the idea of having your photo shoot in the very spot where you got engaged (if you can), to relive the happy moment.
