How much does wedding catering cost?

Food and drink are a major part of the wedding experience (no one wants hangry guests!), so it’s no surprise that you’ll spend a big amount of your total budget on your wedding catering. The average wedding catering cost in the U.S. is about $4,000 with most couples spending between $1,800 to $7,000. Note that wedding catering prices do vary widely depending on your wedding’s location and many other factors, like guest count—but no matter where you’re getting married, delicious and plentiful food is essential to an amazing wedding reception experience.

$ 9,400 or more Upper range

Costs displayed are based on spend from thousands of couples who recently reported pricing for this service within their WeddingWire review. Pricing varies based on factors including, but not limited to, vendor’s experience, level of expertise, event guest count, date, and geographic region.

What is included in a wedding catering package?

Your wedding catering may be provided by your wedding venue, or you may want or need to hire an outside caterer. Reading a wedding catering contract can be a bit confusing, but in general, your wedding catering cost will be priced on a “per person” basis. A standard wedding catering package includes the following:

Food: The wedding food cost is the most obvious part of a wedding catering package. You’re paying for the actual food that your guests will eat during cocktail hour and the main meal. Whether it’s served plated or buffet style is up to you and your caterer.
Beverages: Your caterer will likely provide beverages, both alcoholic and not, for your big day.
Staffing: From your event manager to cooks, servers, bartenders, and more, there are lots of staffers that will go into making your wedding day a success. It’s important to work with your caterer to make sure that you have enough people on hand to ensure a smooth reception.
Rentals: Your caterer may also provide rentals, from tables to chairs, dishes to glassware, utensils, and more. Some venues provide these rentals, or you may need to hire a separate rentals company.
Additional fees: Caterers may charge additional costs and fees, including cake cutting fees, corkage fees, and more. Be sure to read your contract carefully—and ask questions—to make sure you understand your wedding catering cost.

What are the different ways to serve wedding reception food?

When determining your wedding food cost, a big factor will be how you’re planning on serving the meal. There are a few serving style options for weddings:

Plated: Otherwise known as a sit-down meal, your guests will be served their meal at their table by a member of the wait staff. There may be a single entrée option served or several entrée options, which your guests can either order in advance (usually on their RSVP card) or at the event. This is the most formal and traditional of wedding serving styles.
Buffet: For a more casual serving style, guests serve themselves from a buffet station. Fifty percent of couples choose a buffet-style reception.
Family-Style: Servers provide large platters of food to reception tables, and guests pass the trays around and serve themselves.
Cocktail-Style: A more modern service style, food is served via passed hors d’oeuvres and at stations. This allows guests to walk around, and mix and mingle during the reception instead of sitting at their tables.

What is the average wedding catering cost per person?

The average wedding catering cost per person varies depending on your wedding’s service style. For a plated meal, the average cost of wedding catering in the U.S. is $40 per person. For a buffet, the average is $27 per person.

Is a wedding reception buffet always the cheaper option?

Most of the time, a wedding reception buffet is indeed less expensive than a plated dinner. While you’ll pay less in staffing and rentals for a buffet-style meal, you’ll need more food since guests are serving themselves. To keep your buffet budget-friendly, avoid serving costly foods (shrimp, for example) buffet-style or have a staffer on hand to serve your guests from the buffet to keep the portions under control.

What is the average cost of alcohol for a wedding?

Alcohol can comprise a major part of your total wedding catering cost. In general, the average starting price in the U.S. for bar service at a wedding is $15 per person.

One word, DELICIOUS! They have so many yummy options on their menu it was hard to narrow it down. Luckily, we got to go in for a tasting and got to try our options for our wedding and then some. The tasting helped us solidify what we wanted to order. Usually, I am not overly impressed with buffet style food at weddings. This was entirely different! We got comments all night about how good the food was and even today (several days later), are still getting people telling us how great the food was. Would definitely recommend ART for all your catering needs.

Middle of the Island absolutely lived up to their reputation and was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding reception. As Wilmington locals, we had heard for years that Middle of the Island was one of the area's premier caterers, and after working with them ourselves, we completely understand why they have earned such an outstanding reputation. The process was incredibly easy from start to finish. We attended a tasting at their location and were immediately impressed by both the quality of the food and the professionalism of the team. Everything we sampled was delicious, and the tasting made it easy to narrow down our selections for the reception. One thing that initially surprised us was that they do not use traditional contracts or deposits. At first, that felt a little unusual simply because it differs from how many wedding vendors operate. However, we quickly learned that this is their standard business practice, and once we were on their schedule, everything was handled smoothly and professionally. They communicated clearly, answered our questions, and gave us complete confidence that our reception was in good hands. For our reception, we selected a buffet featuring several of their wedding favorites, and the food was outstanding. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, beautifully prepared, and exactly what we hoped for. One of the biggest guest favorites was the seafood pasta. It was absolutely incredible and disappeared so quickly that there weren't any leftovers. Guests were still talking about it after the wedding and making trips back to the buffet for second helpings. Another standout was the corn hash, which was packed with flavor and quickly became one of our personal favorites. And the roast beef was exceptional—so much so that my husband is still talking about how delicious it was weeks after the wedding. What impressed us most was that the quality never felt like "wedding food." Every dish tasted like something you would order at a great restaurant. The food was hot, fresh, and served at exactly the right temperature. Our guests genuinely enjoyed the meal, and it showed. We watched people return for seconds throughout the evening, which is always a great sign when you're hosting a wedding. The catering staff was fantastic. They were professional, friendly, organized, and efficient. They arrived on time, handled setup seamlessly, kept everything looking beautiful throughout service, and worked hard to ensure our guests had a wonderful experience. Their professionalism allowed us to enjoy our reception without worrying about any of the logistics. As a couple planning a wedding, one of the greatest gifts a vendor can give you is confidence. Middle of the Island gave us exactly that. We knew the food would be excellent, we knew our guests would be well taken care of, and they delivered on every promise. We received countless compliments on the meal, and several guests specifically asked who our caterer was because they enjoyed the food so much. If you're planning a wedding or special event in the Wilmington area, Middle of the Island deserves every bit of the reputation they have built. The food is exceptional, the staff is wonderful, and the entire experience was seamless from beginning to end. We would happily recommend them to anyone looking for incredible food and outstanding service for their event. Thank you for helping make our wedding reception such a memorable and delicious celebration!

The food... oh my goodness. I don't even know where to begin with the food. Sarah Gore - ROCKED THE FOOD! I have had the most compliments on everything, but they all come back around to the food. What is a wedding without amazing food, right? Sarah is the best. We had a southern style buffet that included Pulled BBQ, slaw, and baked beans, and then Balsamic chicken breast, succotash, and macaroni and cheese - served with a roll, sweet tea, and lemonade. It was all to die for. Sarah also handled all of our cocktail hour needs - fruits, nuts, and cheese & crackers. I highly recommend using this woman. So professional - and she brought along an amazing staff.

I could not be happier that I chose Floyd’s to cater my aquarium wedding. Melanie was so easy to work with, worked with us through a couple of tastings, always warm and friendly. The wait and bar staff were wonderful. They made extra care to ensure my husband and I were making time to eat. The food was excellent, with guests especially raving about the crab cake appetizers, and the shrimp and grits. Would absolutely recommend Floyd’s, again and again!
