History

The Inn at Blackstone was first founded in 1892 as the Blackstone College for Girls. Among the school's alumni was one of the first female marines, legendary actress Bea Arthur of the Golden Girls, and Nicaragua's first female president, Violeta Chamorro. The college provided safe housing for Fort Pickett soldiers during both World War II and the Korean War. Just two weeks after V-Day, boarders were welcomed back to class and the campus provided education as an all-female institute until their final commencement ceremony in 1950.
