SRY I have a lot of questions today... LOL, is this tacky?

Hello vendors, grooms, and fellow brides. Would it be tacky to use paper plates, disposable cups and silverwear at a wedding reception? We can't afford to rent these items and the venue doesn't include those... Thank you!:) O and instead of making another post, does anyone know where I can find inexpensive containers for a candy buffet?

It depends on the type of reception....backyard BBQ/picnic style reception? of course that's fine......traditional formal wedding reception? no way....either style of wedding is fine but you can't have a formal wedding with paper plates, some things don't mix

It is perfectly fine. We are doing the same thing because we can't afford the real thing. Plus the clean up is sooo much easier since all the guests have to do is throw the plates, silverware, etc away. I don't know where you live but where I am I know most caterers have dinnerware that you can use that is included in their cost. Sometimes you can even give them a small amount to buy plates or cups, etc in your colors. But no there is definitely nothing wrong or tacky with this. The guests are just going to put food on them and throw them away anyway so it's not like they are a HUGE part of the night or anything like that.

Thanks ladies, Laura, it would be a park pavillion reception, so nothing incredibly fancy, we are looking to have a pretty simple reception. Thanks again ladies!:)

For a park pavilion I think it would be fine but instead of paper I think the plastic ones that look like glass would be better. I know if you go through the posts someone posted a link to a wholesale place.

That's a good idea Sachele. Wholesale places are definitely the place to go for stuff like this because they are as expensive and you still get a great product.

I think that would be fine. You can get paper plates and stuff like that from a party store. And they come in all colors.
Look online at Oriental Trading Company.com they sell party items in bulk. You can get everything from there.
As far as for the candy buffet jars. I just started buying mine today and I went to the dollar store (dollar tree). Look areound the house you may have some vases and thing that you can use. Also Wal-mart I got an oversized Martini glass for 10.00 bucks.
good luck

Thanks ladies, Trina, I LOVE orientaltrading! That is by far my favorite site, but I just looked and they really don't have containers, then again I only looked under the wedding section, so maybe I should look under something else, thanks ladies. I appreciate your inputs and thoughts.

walmart has a fantastic vase section with containers as low as $1 and $2...I got my glass cylinders for centerpieces there...and I agree with the PP that the fancy plastic plates would be better, if anything just because they are sturdier and you don't want a plate of food plopping into anyone's lap! LOL

You could also try Hobby Lobby holiday sales. I know right now the one where I live has stuff like that half off for the holidays. Black Friday is also a day to go wedding shopping for a great price..:-)

I also think that the disposable plates, utensils etc. will be okay in this instance and it does make for faster cleanup too (as someone mentioned before).

I think it would be fine. They do have some disposable utensils that look real and plastic plates have come a long way to look like real ones.

LOL @ Laura, good point, there are select few ppl that I want to get food all over their laps.. but I would never do that, thanks Laura, I will check out walmart. Thanks JJ, as long as I am not too scared to venture out on black friday, it makes me think of someone that died working at walmart on black friday because they got trampled on... its so sad. Thanks everyone!:)

If you are looking at the square disposable plates, try smartyhadaparty.com (it's like a sister company of partyatlewis.com). They are a little cheaper at smarty than at party lol.

As everyone has said - the disposable idea for a park reception.. Perfect :)
A wierd thought (or two) - but worth a shot??
Try contacting a local (food) ditribution company - they usually have a cash n carry option and sell the items you are looking for for decent pricing. Sometimes cheaper than sam's club or costco.. or even the same cost as those but with out having to get a membership!
If it's out of your budget because it is bulk and the quantity is too much... hit up some friends that love to throw parties or get togethers - I'm sure easy way to kill numerous birds there.

Don't do PAPER!!! Do plastic :) Not as eco friendly but the plate wont fall apart and won't fly away with the wind

Get the plastic ones that look like real china. My mom did that for my brothers wedding. They looked nice and it made for easy clean-up. There is also plastic silverware that looks real.

naw, the enclosed pavillion doesn't make a difference...laura was referring to hotel style receptions, ya know? oh and i've been to functions, with sit down dinners, where dinner was served on plasticware, for a FORMAL function...yep. we're doing the bed and breakfast route, and i'm going to get all the square stuff, the sturdy plastic stuff. cos we can throw it out, no one's left having to do dishes, and we don't have to return it to a rental company ;)

Definately look for the plastic silverware that looks like actual silver--sold in huge boxes at Costco and places like that.
Posted On: Nov 09, 2009 at 12:13 PM | Flag As Inappropriate
Try instawares, they have nice hard plastic disposables in several shapes, sizes, & colors. They are plastic, not paper so do not look as bad, you can also order glass from Oriental Trading and places like that.

For your candy containers, try yard sales, goodwill, etc. They always have tons of clear vases, or even baskets depending on your theme or style.

OMG reddiva, you said the dreaded "T" word!!! Seems like questions about what is "tacky" or people's comments about "tacky" have been setting off some of the firestorms lately! ;-) Seriously though, as PPs have said I think you are fine with disposables, anything that simplifies your logistics, I say go for it! Do you have a Party City near you? I went there on a whim the week before my wedding, and found a lot of great stuff that took care of a lot of my last minute to-dos, it was such a relief! I thought they were all about cheap looking stuff, but was pleasantly surprised to find they had a lot of nicer looking stuff too.

I went on e-bay for my wedding and got some very nice clear plastic plates and silverware in a wholesale lot. They had scrollwork imprinted on the edge and being clear it didnt stand out as much as a typical paper plate. Plus being plastic they held up better. If you are interested, I can see how many unopened packages we have left. I dont think we used them all.

My cousin had her entire wedding at her parents and the reception was in tents, and she had VERY nice disposable plates and what not, hers were not paper though, they were a plastic type, she got them from costco, they were white with a silver edge on them, I would reccomend those type of plates, as paper ones are VERY flimsy, and no one wnats to be wearing their dinner! ESPECIALLY the bride!

My bestfriend had her reception in an American Leagon (VFW kinda thing) and it was a BBQ style food, and the plastic plates, cups & silverwear worked great and honestly I don't think anyone really had a second thought about it. she got hers at kingsoopers it was the gen. brand plastic elegant plates and stuff but it was nice. I think we ended up spending about $75 for all the plates, bowls, silverwear and cups for 70ish people.
