What is the purpose of an engagement party?
What is the actual purpose of an engagement party? Is there anything particular that is expected to happen during one? Are they normally more formal or casual events? And is there any reason not to just skip that part? I'd appreciate any information you can give me. Thanks!

An engagement party is to celebrate your engagement and kick off the wedding festivities. It is also meant to introduce the two families if they don't yet know one another. Traditionally the bride's parents host the party. I believe it's commonly a more casual event, such as a cookout at the home of the bride's parents, but it's really up to you and your family. Basically everyone comes together to eat, drink, and socialize. Normally some guests will bring engagement gifts, either items from your registry, a bottle of wine/champagne, wedding planning books, or keepsakes such as a wedding album. Some cons can be the added cost, the time to plan and attend another wedding related party, and needing to know who will be invited to the wedding, as it is inappropriate to invite someone to an engagement party and not the wedding. Here's an article that may help:

My fiance and I used our engagement party to officially ask our wedding party to stand up in our wedding. We gave them each a small gift. I made tiny scrapbooks with photos of me with each of my girls and him with each of his guys and we included letters about what their friendship means to us. I also bought the girls flip flops in our wedding color and included a swatch from the bridal shop for their dresses. It was nice to get everyone together.
