does formal have to mean long dresses?

I am having a formal evening wedding and I was just wondering, do my bridesmaids have to wear long dresses?

I think that it is up to you, I would say if you want them in short dresses just get a dress that looks formal.

Protocol is that a formal wedding has long dresses, but it's your wedding! :-) You can do whatever you want!!
