Saying Yes to the Dress in NYC

You can spend a lot on wedding dresses in NYC, but you don’t have to. While you could easily drop thousands upon thousands of dollars on a designer gown, the fact is that couples in the Big Apple spend a bit less than the national average. Surprised? Don’t be. Consider that the city is a hub of fashion, so for every couture gown, there are dozens of indie dress designers creating beautiful one-of-a-kind creations and even more spots to score deep discounts on off-the-rack gowns.

The point is that you’ll have no problem finding the dress of your dreams here, even if you don’t start shopping eight months ahead of your wedding date (which is the usual recommendation) and regardless of your wedding budget. Should you need a gown ASAP, there are NYC wedding dress shops and seamstresses that can get you in a dress much faster.

What Shopping for Wedding Dresses in NYC Is Like

That depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. If you want a photo-worthy, by-appointment-only boutique experience where attentive salespeople bring you gown after gown, you can have that. But if you’d prefer to browse through racks of plastic-wrapped wedding dresses in a NYC warehouse, you can do that, too. There are also lots of small shops where tailors and seamstresses can create (or recreate) just about any style of dress. Not sure what you’re looking for? Luckily, there is a lot of inspiration out there, so feel free to spend whatever free time you have browsing gowns until you find the silhouettes, hemlines, colors, and fabrics that strike your fancy. That way, when you do meet with a salesperson or a seamstress, you’ll be able to convey what it is you’re looking for.

Remember, Rules are Meant to Be Broken

You’ve probably heard a lot of rules about which wedding gowns should be worn where and by whom. When you actually start shopping for and trying on wedding dresses in NYC boutiques, however, you may discover that you are falling in love with gowns you never thought you’d go for. It’s not uncommon for someone to start shopping with an idea of what fabrics, silhouettes, lengths, and necklines they like and don’t like only to end up choosing a wedding dress that’s nothing like what they first envisioned. Keep an open mind! When a salesperson brings you a gown you wouldn’t have given a second glance, try it on anyway. You may just fall in love with it!

WeddingWire has all the tools you need to make finding your perfect wedding dress in NYC a total breeze. From tips and tricks for finding the gown of your dreams to advice about must-have accessories to everything you need to know to pick bridesmaids dresses your bridal party will adore, you’ll find it all right here.
