All That Glitters: A Guide to Choosing Jewelry (and a NYC Wedding Jeweler)

Wedding jewelry has always had a significance beyond its sparkle. Consider how often brides opt for jewelry when they’re looking for something old and something new (not to mention something borrowed and, occasionally, something blue). Wedding rings may be what most of us think of when we’re imagining a visit to one of the many NYC wedding jewelers out there, but the fact is that wedding jewelry as a category encompasses so much more.

There’s a tendency for people to gravitate toward costume pieces when choosing wedding jewelry, but don’t assume that you can’t wear the good stuff. There are NYC wedding jewelers with wares for every wedding budget, and many beautiful colorless gems — like white topaz — that stand in perfectly well for diamonds.

What to Wear When and Where

Any of the talented wedding jewelers in NYC will tell you that the right pieces can enhance your entire wedding day look and even draw people’s attention to your best features. The temptation to simply wear anything and everything on your Big Day may be strong, but don’t overdo it. The layered look can be amazing, but too much of a good thing isn’t always a good thing. Resist the urge, and choose your jewelry strategically — with the help of a good NYC wedding jeweler, if necessary.

Step one is deciding whether you like dainty jewelry or big, bold statement pieces. Next, consider which styles — and colors — will look the best with your wedding dress. A good rule of thumb is more dress, less jewelry, and vice versa. For instance, if you’re wearing a strapless gown, a statement necklace will make your décolletage feel less bare, but if your gown has a higher neckline, you might not wear a necklace at all and instead choose a pair of fabulous earrings.

In general, gold jewelry pairs well with cream, ivory, and champagne gowns, while silver and platinum pieces look lovely with bright white wedding dresses. That said, don’t be afraid to wear two different metals or to wear colored pieces if you find ones you adore, and remember that you can never go wrong with pearls.

Don’t Forget Your Attendants

The VIPs who stand at your side on your Big Day deserve to look and feel special, too, and a gift of jewelry is a great way to make your attendants stand out from the rest of your wedding guest list. It was popular in years past to give bridesmaids coordinating jewelry sets, but it’s much more likely today for a couple to give their attendants one-of-a-kind pieces that the recipients will want to wear again. That way, the gift does double duty. Your attendants will look fabulous and have a beautiful memento of your special day.

To find a good NYC wedding jeweler, ask friends and family for recommendations and read reviews. Once you’ve found one, your wedding budget will help you determine how much you can safely spend on your wedding day accessories.
