How much does a wedding cake cost?

Having a wedding cake at your reception is one of the biggest (and sweetest!) traditions. But what does a wedding cake cost? While wedding cake prices do vary depending on the size and style of your cake, the average cost of a wedding cake in the U.S. is around $500 with most couples spending between $300 to $700. While this may sound like a lot for a dessert, you’d be surprised as to how much work goes into creating a gorgeous wedding cake.

Which factors impact wedding cake prices?

Not surprisingly, the bigger and more elaborate a wedding cake is, the higher the cost of a wedding cake will be. A wedding cake featuring lots of design elements, including sugar flowers, fondant details, many tiers, and unique shapes, will cost more than a simpler cake with classic buttercream icing, a few fresh flowers, and fewer tiers. While your flavor choice likely won’t have an impact on your wedding cake’s price, requesting certain custom flavors may raise your wedding cake cost a bit.

What is the starting price of a wedding cake?

The starting price of a wedding cake can vary depending on the type of frosting you prefer. Cakes covered in fondant, a sugary paste-like icing, tend to cost more than cakes covered in buttercream (frosting made from butter and sugar). Fondant is more durable than buttercream (and it won’t melt in the summertime!), but it’s generally thought of as less tasty. The starting price of a fondant wedding cake is usually about $5 per slice, while the starting price of a buttercream wedding cake is about $4 per slice. Again, these wedding cake prices will vary even more based on decorations, size, etc.

What’s included in the cost of a wedding cake?

This varies from cake baker to cake baker. Usually, the cost of your wedding cake will include the cake itself, a design consultation where your baker will create a custom design just for your wedding, caketasting, delivery and set up. Some cake bakers will also include supplies like cake stands, cake toppers, and cutting utensils, though you may have to provide these on your own. And some wedding cake prices include an extra top tier of your wedding cake or anniversary cake for you and your spouse to enjoy on your first anniversary.

What types of desserts do wedding cake bakers offer?

About 54 percent of couples choose to serve an additional wedding dessert, aside from or in addition to wedding cake, at their receptions. Cake bakers may offer a variety of these alternative wedding desserts, including cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, pies, pastries, doughnuts, and more—the starting price for cupcakes is about $3 per cupcake. There are also groom’s cakes, which are a tradition particularly in the South. We’ve seen these groom’s cakes shaped like everything from sports paraphernalia to burritos!

When should I hire a wedding cake baker?

We recommend hiring a wedding cake baker at least six months before your wedding day—these vendors do tend to book up quickly! Working with Sweet Doughs was a pleasure! We could not have asked for a more beautiful (or tasty) wedding cake. And for such a great price! I searched and searched for quality cake vendors on Oahu, and Athena was by far the most affordable. She should be charging triple what she does! We got the same great taste and beautiful decorations as we would have from a high-priced baker. She perfectly realized our vision for the cake decorations, creating a lovely three-tiered, fondant cake. She was also kind enough to let us do a cake tasting in the days before the wedding. She was somewhat delayed in her e-mail responses in the beginning of our engagement, but on the day of the wedding, she was prompt and professional. She even let us borrow a cake stand for free, which was very sweet. I would definitely recommend Sweet Doughs to others looking for a delicious, affordable wedding cake!

I can't recommend Sweet Marie's enough. I have celiac disease and so my husband and I decided we wanted to go with a completely gluten-free bakery. We were actually planning to use another bakery, but they fell through, and Marie took our order with less than 2 weeks to go until our wedding! We decided on guava cake with coconut filling and vanilla buttercream. She also made us some vegan cupcakes for our dairy allergy and vegan guests. I feel like you can never really trust the flavor of a gluten-free cake (haha), but her cake & cupcakes were truly delicious!! Even my husband loved them, and he's a hard sell on gluten-free baked goods. Marie was so easy to talk to, and was quickly available via call or text if I had questions. Our cake was so beautiful!! She even drove out to our venue (Turtle Bay) to assemble the cake and affix our cake flowers and cake topper. She was just as lovely in person. 5+ stars for Marie and her GF bakery!

Kawaii Cupcake was incredible. The list of choices for our cake and cupcakes was unbelievable and wish I had a chance to try more. I would highly recommend Kawaii Cupcake for any occasion. Also if you have the chance, their homemade donuts are also an awesome treat!

Although they don't do traditional wedding cakes, my favorite of all time is their banana cake with butter cream icing. I knew I wanted this so I didn't have to go through the trouble of going out of my way to taste and pick all kinds of details. I chose a full, a half, and a quarter sheet cake and stacked them. No decorations on top, just some fresh tropical flowers. It came out better than I could've imagined and everyone LOVED the taste. How could they not, it's the bomb! Thanks Liliha!
