For our wedding venue, we wanted an outdoor location that was close to attractions, restaurants/bars, and hotels because we knew that most of our guests would be out-of-towners. Enter Historic Tredegar: we have been there countless times for Richmond festivals but had no idea that they hosted weddings until we came across their social media page and oh my goodness, we could NOT have been more pleased with this venue!
This place has become super popular for weddings so it's important to inquire about available dates WAY in advance if your heart is set on Historic Tredegar; we contacted them about 13 months before the actual wedding day. Tracy is such an awesome Site Coordinator and basically a one-woman operation with Tredegar weddings. We admit at the very beginning, it was a tad difficult to get in touch with her (we're guessing she was just super busy preparing for other weddings/events) but in the 4 months leading up to the big day, she was ALWAYS there for us and was happy to help out in every way possible. Tracy, we LOVE you and thank you times a million - you are such a rock star!
One tiny knock on this venue is that you need to contact A TON of vendors for your wedding vision to come together (chair/table rentals, linens, lighting, caterer, stemware, florals, etc.). HT doesn't really do in-house services, they only provide the venue itself, so if hiring numerous vendors isn't your cup of tea, you might want to consider another venue. They do have a list of suggested vendors and we actually ended up booking our caterer and rentals company from their great list.
Our guests were raving about Historic Tredegar and kept commenting on the uniqueness of the venue, the gorgeous brick and architectural details, the rich history, and wonderful location right along the James River! Historic Tredegar was truly the most amazing and perfect venue for our wedding.

So unique and just perfect for us
Tredegar is just so cool! It's a strange word to describe a wedding venue, but that's what it is! There are so many spots to host any and each of your event times, and photos were a dream on the river and with the old brick ruins. We had our ceremony by the old barn looking doors, our cocktail hour was in the museum foyer, and the tent reception was on the property's upper level. I loved that we got married at a museum and such a historical spot.
I think my planner should be reviewing the venue as well because I didn't have a whole bunch of interaction with the event coordinator. What I gathered and personally interacted with was ok, but I know planners don't love working with the coordinator. She's more of a scheduler, less available to do specific event coordination, and she's all over the place. That being said, all went perfect, so in the end it didn't matter.

The venue was gorgeous and Tracy was extremely helpful and easy to work with! If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely use this venue again!

My husband and I fell in love with Tredegar the instant we saw it and it was definitely the right place for us to have our wedding. It provides a beautiful, urban setting at a reasonable price (in our opinion), and is within a very short distance to hotels for our many out of town guests. We also loved the flexibility of being able to use our own preferred vendors, rather that being required to choose certain ones. I would note that the site was under construction during our wedding, and it was beautiful even under those circumstances.
That being said, the staff was very unprofessional and difficult to deal with. Thankfully my wedding planner dealt with the brunt of the interactions with the venue coordinator, but my understanding is that those were not pleasant experiences and if I were not fortunate enough to have an amazing planner, I can't imagine I would be recommending Tredegar as the best place to have an event. I would take this point into serious consideration if you are planning a wedding without a planner!!!

This is gorgeous venue offered at a fairly reasonable price. However, my husband and I have cautioned many friends that this is likely not a place they would like to have a wedding reception due to the staff. We found the staff very unresponsive and rude.
There is a large tent on the patio that we requested be removed. They told us that there would be a fee to use it or a fee to remove it, to this day I still don't understand that one. The staff failed to provide many crucial details until the 11th hour when our planner and vendors were setting up the day of. For example, we had told the staff that we were planning to have various lights staged through out the grounds, but it wasn't until our lighting vendor showed up that our planner was informed that we were required to rent power and that there wasn't an outlet available for these lights.
Bottom line, this space is gorgeous. Staff is very difficult.
