About

The Blue Orchid provides custom floral designs for fabulous weddings in the Wine Country and throughout Northern California, including Napa, Sonoma and Marin counties.  With an absolute passion for flowers, weddings -- and our brides! -- we pride ourselves on fresh, gorgeous blooms beautifully designed, superior client service, and impeccable quality and style.

We understand your budgetary concerns, and we are always happy to work with you to maximize your available floral budget.  As part of that effort, we offer a wide array of rental items, beyond the customary vases and containers -- including paper lanterns, fabric for draping, ribbon streamer sets, scattering crystals, and collections of hanging crystals.  For the ultimate reception showpiece, our beautiful Crystal Tree is also available as a rental item -- a custom-made tree of Manzanita branches standing five feet tall and dripping with strands of Swarovski crystals.  Gorgeous on its own, our Crystal Tree can also be upgraded with candles, a variety of floral options and colors to coordinate with the overall theme of your wedding.

I have worked with Heather Murdock multiple times over the last five years. Her passion for design always amazes me as she uses flowers to masterfully create true works of art. Many times I have seen the look of delight on brides' faces when they first see their Blue Orchid bouquets on their wedding day. To top it off, Heather is a delight to be around and it is my pleasure to recommend her to my brides, as I know she will blow them away.

Frequently Asked Questions for Flowers & Decor
What type of decor (if any) do you offer?
We offer a variety of rental items, including vases, containers, pedestals, urns, candle stands, arch, and huppah, and additional items available through third-party vendors.

Do you provide non-floral additions to floral arrangements?
Our beautiful Crystal Tree, paper lanterns, ribbon sets, glass-glittered candle treatments, Swarovski crystals and strands, and thousands of scattering crystals -- just to name a few items!

Do you offer full-services, such as wedding day setup, for an additional fee?
Absolutely! In addition, we are able to provide table design services, as well as event and rental coordination services.

Di you have not worked at the ceremony or reception sites previously, would you be willing to visit the sites before the event?
Always! To offer the best options possible, we never provide a proposal involving an event site we haven't seen before. In addition to getting a "feel" for the location, it is also important that we meet their event staff and understand their rules, policies, and limitations.

Additional Questions and Answers
Do you have a limit as to how many weddings or events you will book in a day or a week?  Yes!  Our personal connection with our clients is very important to us, as well as the details of the event.  Therefore, in general, we limit our bookings to one event per day, with a maximum of two per weekend in most instances.

Do you provide complimentary consultations, and if so, what is involved in that process?  There is never a charge for our consultations, and we would never book an event without having done a thorough consultation.  Depending on the scope of the event, our initial consultation can last from one to three hours.  (For more detailed information about the consultation process, preparing for your consultation, and what to bring, please see our blog postings!)

How do you handle a consultation when the bride isn’t in the same area?  Since we are located in the Wine Country of Northern California, which is certainly a destination area for weddings, our clients are often from other parts of the country.  We can schedule the consultation for when they are next visiting our area, or if preferred, we often do the initial consultation by telephone, and then a meet-and-greet later on.  We have, in fact, had a number of events where we didn’t actually meet the bride in person until the day of her wedding!

Do you hold my date for any length of time, and if so, for how long?  As a courtesy to our clients -- and to minimize wasting everyone’s time -- we only meet with one bride for a specific date at a time.  In other words, we do not meet with multiple brides simultaneously for the same date.  Our policy is to hold your date for one week from the submission of our written proposal to you.  After that, the date becomes available to the next bride requesting it, but in that instance, we would certainly contact you first if we haven’t heard from you by that time.

Do you provide a written proposal?  Absolutely and always!  In most instances, we provide a written, detailed proposal to you within a week of our consultation meeting.  Our proposals are emailed to you, and are broken out into sections and are very thorough.  All of the notes taken during the consultation are included within the appropriate sections of the proposals.  As we work through the planning process for your event, these notes are updated to maintain a current picture of your event and your order with us.  In addition, your proposal is incorporated into your contract by reference and by attachment -- this means you always have an accurate list of all items and the details of each.  Our clients find this approach very helpful throughout the planning process -- as well as on the day of the wedding!

Is there another meeting prior to the event?  We schedule a final detail review meeting with you approximately six weeks prior to your wedding.  Given everyone’s time constraints and locations, this meeting is usually held by phone, during which we review every item with you contained in the proposal and contract, confirm delivery and setup times, etc..

After we have booked with you, are you available to us if we have questions or need assistance?  Yes!  We are very responsive to emails and phone calls from our clients and their vendors, and our brides are always welcome to contact us if we can be assistance in any way.  Please note that as a courtesy to our brides, we do not respond to calls or emails on the day of a wedding -- except, of course, from that day’s bride or her vendors!  This policy permits us to be solely focused on our work for that day’s event and to make sure we have addressed every detail.

How do I book my event with you?  A date is booked and guaranteed only upon execution of a contract and payment of a deposit (usually equal to 50% of the order).

What if I want to book you to do my wedding flowers, but haven't decided on colors or a theme yet?  In this instance, we offer an Event Guarantee instead of a contract to book your date.  This allows you to secure your date, but leaves the details open until you have decided on your base colors and/or theme.  The date is booked upon execution of an Event Guarantee document and payment of a deposit (amount of which to be determined with you).  Once you have decided on your order and what you want, we then enter into a full contract with you.  When booking with this method, we do request that we complete the item list and enter into a full contract no later than two months prior to the event.

Is there any type of work that you won’t do?  We always strive to give our brides exactly what they want.  The majority of our clients are looking for current styles and trends, and to that end, we do not offer what some might consider "old-school" floral design.  By that, we do not do Carnations and Baby’s Breath in triangular-shaped arrangements in cheap baskets.  However, there are certainly times where beautiful Carnations can be used in fun, whimsical, or modern arrangements, and we love to do that kind of design work!

Likewise, the majority of our bouquet requests are for hand-tied bouquets.  When a cascade-style bouquet is requested, we still construct it in a hand-tied fashion, and avoid using the unattractive, white plastic-and-foam bouquet holders.  While the use of holders used to be widespread, this is no longer the method for most style-minded designers, and we believe a hand-tied/hand-wired bouquet provides a more naturally-flowing appearance to a cascading bouquet.
