Wedding Favor Facts & Traditions
Wedding favors are small gifts given as a gesture of appreciation or gratitude to guests from the bride and groom during a wedding ceremony or a wedding reception. It is a way to say thank you for joining in the wedding celebration.
The tradition of distributing wedding favors is a very old one. It is believed that the first wedding favor, common amongst European aristocrats, was known as a bonbonniere. A bonbonniere was a small trinket box made of crystal, porcelain, or precious stones. Generally, the little boxes were filled with sugar cubes or delicate confections. Sugar was expensive and it was believed that sugar had medicinal value.
As sugar became more affordable, bonbonnieres were replaced with almonds. For centuries, almonds were commonly distributed to wedding guests to signify well wishes on the bride and groom’s new life. In the thirteenth century, almonds coated with sugar, known as confetti, were introduced. Confetti soon transformed to sugared almonds, which later evolved into the wedding favor for modern day weddings now known as Jordan almonds. Traditionally, five Jordan almonds are presented in a confection box or wrapped in elegant fabric to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness. The bitterness of the almond and the sweetness of the coated candy exemplify the bitter sweetness of a marriage.
Today, gifts to guests are commonly known as wedding favors and are shared in cultures worldwide. Wedding favors have become an intricate part of wedding reception planning, especially in the United States and Canada. Today’s favors are unique, elegant, fun, colorful, and some gifts may even be personalized with the couple's names and the wedding date. What Is A Wedding Favor?
A wedding favor is the gift or token of appreciation that you give to each guest at your wedding. This favor is to thank them for attending your wedding.
Giving a favor to each of your guests not only says thank you, we are happy you came to our wedding, but you will also be providing your guests with a memorable keepsake of your special day.
What About Adding A Label To The Wedding Favor?
Adding a label to your favors will show your guests that you took the time to pay attention to detail and consider them to be a special part of your day. The label is just a simple reminder to the guest that they have shared your special day with you.
Should You Personalize The wedding Favors?
Adding personalization to each wedding favor is another way to say a special thank you to each guest and let them know that you appreciate that they took time out of their schedule to share your special day with you. To personalize the wedding favor, simply add the name of the guest in the favor.
You can do this by making a list of each guest that you have invited to your wedding. Your invitation guest list can aide you in this.
You can purchase labels at any office store or online at Granny’s Bridal Boutique. You can purchase labels with personalization or you can simply use your computer and a word processing program to personalize each wedding favor.
Adding a little personal note is a nice touch to each favor. Each guest will know that you put thought into each favor and that the favor is especially for them.
Consider making a few extra favors for unexpected guests. Sometimes you will invite a guest and they will bring an unexpected person with them. You will want to assure that each guest receives a favor. You can generically personalize these extra favors with just a “thank you for sharing out special day”.
What Type Of Wedding Favors Are You Going To Give Away?
There are many types of wedding favors that you can choose to give to each guest at your wedding. Typically, the favors that you choose to give away will follow the theme of your wedding.
When Should You Give The Guest The Wedding Favors?
There are no set rules for when you should give away the wedding favors. It is up to you to decide when you would like to give the wedding favors away to your guests.
One of the most popular ways to give your guests their personalized wedding favors is to place the favors on a table with their names on the favor to let your guests know where you would like them to be seated.
I am so confused. How do I choose my flowers?
Choosing your wedding flowers can be one of the most confusing and time-consuming projects for your wedding day.
Most brides are on a very tight budget, so it is important that you choose flowers that will be in season during the time that you have planned to get married. If you have a big budget many growers and florists are able to fly in almost any type of flower that you will want from anywhere in the world for your big day; however, you will be paying premium prices.
It is important that you talk to your florist prior to setting your wedding date, so that you are sure to have the flowers that you want at a price you can afford.
Granny’s Bridal Boutique has put together a list of the most popular flowers with their meanings and their seasons as a starting point for you. Please feel free to copy and paste into word, so that you have a reference when you go flower shopping.
