Best Time of Year to Get Married in Bermuda
If you’ve got a Bermuda destination wedding in mind, you’ll want to find the perfect combination of warm sun, quiet beaches, and affordable prices. Without a true “rainy season,” Bermuda is a great place to visit year-round - though the island can sometimes feel the effects of nearby hurricanes in the fall. Busy season runs from May to October, during the warmest months of the year. If you visit in March or April, you’ll find temps in the 70s and smaller crowds, perfect if you want to say “I do” on a sunny beach. More of a golfing crowd? Visit through the winter, where temps in the high 60s and low 70s are perfect for a day on the course and many hotels offer seasonal discounts.
Marriage Laws in Bermuda
For your marriage in Bermuda to be legally recognized by the island country, it takes is a little advanced planning. At least 15 days before you plan to marry, submit a Notice of Intended Marriage form. If you’ve been divorced or are widowed, proper documentation must be included. You’ll also have to make a payment by credit or debit card, and can do this part online or by mail (so you won’t actually have to be in Bermuda for two weeks before your ceremony - unless you want to, of course!). The marriage license currently costs $353, plus a $65 fee for your marriage certificate after your ceremony has taken place. After the 15 day waiting period, your marriage license will be issued and is available to be picked up. It will be valid for 3 months. Additional fees for civil ceremonies overseen by the Registrar do apply. To make it legal, you’ll need a recognized officiant and two witnesses. Once your ceremony is complete, your officiant will submit a Particulars of Marriage form so the marriage can be registered, and you’ll receive your marriage certificate within 10 days.
As of June 6th, 2018 same-sex marriage is legally recognized in Bermuda. The British territory has had a number of court cases regarding the legality and definition of same-sex marriages through 2017 and 2018, so it is recommended that any same-sex couples do thorough research into the matter before planning a wedding in Bermuda.
