Were you expecting a proposal, yet totally surprised by it?

sundaycupcake, on August 23, 2012 at 11:47 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 44

We have been talking about getting married for months. We went ring shopping (looked at rings). We've been discussing actual wedding plans. We even took our engagement photos because the photographer I liked had a ridiculously good deal for a short period of time. I knew the official proposal was coming *some day*, but no idea when. Lo and behold the proposal came and I was completely surprised!

Did something like this happen to you?

I knew it was coming and even when it would happen as he wanted to ask my daughter first then ask me with him by her side. So not surprised about the when but very surprised with the how and the way he did it - the words he used. It was a very special moment, even knowing it was coming.

Yes! My FI wanted to be engaged before we moved in together...and we went to Cancun a week before our move in date so I figured it would happen on our trip. I even got my nails done right before the trip lol. But the way he proposed was we were walking toward the ocean and he called my name and I turned around and he was on one knee and all he said way will you marry me. I was so shocked because he is a planner and I thought there would be a speech or a dinner or something - it just caught me really off guard!

Kinda. Yes. We looked at rings, I fell in love with one ring. He planned us to have a lil hotel stay over New years eve weekend. Thought it would happen then...nothing. Then around our datting Aniv he was acting weird. I thought maybe work or w/e. He said hed NEVER ask on our datting Aniv. So we go out to dinner, movie and nice hotel and he asks. Since it wasnt our "date" and just when we where celebrating it he says he didnt do it on our aniv. lol

Sort of expecting it was coming soon but totally surprised the day it actually happened. I wasn't one of those girls who picked out her own engagement ring or anything like that, it was all him and it was a great surprise!

Definitely for me! We had talked about it for at least a year and I knew he was going to do it "soon" but was completely thrown off when he did it because I was not expecting it then at all. It for once was not in my head that it could happen during this trip. So nice to have a surprise like that!

I knew it was going to happen at some point. I had been sending him pictures of rings for awhile so he would know what I wanted, and I knew that he had been to the jeweler's to look at rings. I didn't know that he had purchased a ring, or that he was going to propose when he did. He had a friend get in on it to get me where he wanted me and I had NO IDEA. Totally shocked me.

With my DH I had no idea what to expect. We had only been dating for 11 months and living together for 5. He was hinting around that he might propose but he is such a big jokester that I never knew when to expect it. My birthday was approaching along with our one year anniversary so I thought maybe around that time frame. But I figured he’d wait until after because I assumed he thought I would expect it on my bday or our anniversary. So I was very surprised to find a dozen red roses waiting for me on our kitchen counter one random day in July. He followed that up with a “will you marry me” : )

I knew it was coming. We shopped for rings in January, had an account set up for a wedding (3 years of tax returns, we were so disiplined!)

He started acting strange and surprised me with a trip to Vegas for my 30th bday. He proposed the day before--took the sting off that birthday! He was guarding the backpack with the ring in it like a hawk. I knew something was up.

    YES!

I even overheard him asking for my parents' blessing 4 months earlier (total accident I wasn't being snoopy.)

But then a bunch of life stuff happened (his mom died unexpectedly), I was SO not thinking about it, and when he proposed before Christmas it was like I had no clue. He totally surprised me. When I looked back on his big proposal plans (a weekend getaway to Vail) I can't believe I didn't know what was going on. He was an adorably nervous wreck. Smiley smile It was just seriously the furthest thing from my mind.

We never went ring shopping or anything, he did that on his own.

We had been together for 8 years. We had discussed changing my title from GF to FW, however, we both knew we were not quite ready for marriage. We are "if it feels right do it" kind of people. Marriage just didn't feel right. So, the proposal came out of left field. While I accepted the ring, and had the changed title, I was not ready to set a date. Flash forward, in August of 2010, I had had the ring for over a year, I asked him to marry me, and we set the date. I asked him while we were at the our DW venue in Vermont.

I didnt even know he was thinking about proposing to me until the day of, he was acting all jittery, couldnt stay still and in the middle of the night he wanted to speak to my parents. Which to me was "the sign" i didnt want to ruin the surprise so i just went along with it. but yes when he did get down on one knee i couldnt help but bust out laughing and kept asking him if he was serious lol.

We'd been talking seriously about a wedding, etc for a while because we kinda figured we'd get married in the next few years. but the proposal itself was a complete and total shock! he plotted with my sister for over a month before the proposal! i'd been ring shopping and given him the little catalog thingy the sales lady gave me and i had my options and my favorite all laid out. turns out FH had gone the very next day and bought my favorite pick and met with my sis and they hid the ring in her room for a whole month, all the while he kept saying "geez idk when i'm going to be able to get by there, they may have already sold it, what will we do then?" etc etc etc that little sneak!! lol and i ESPECIALLY didn't expect a proposal on a beach with a little crowd of our family and friends!!

Yep. Was expecting it later than it happened. Our co-worker who had been bugging us to get together said we should get married 11/11/11 -- way too early, so we thought maybe we'll get engaged then. We had been talking about it from a few months in, and had looked at rings online and stuff, but I just thought he was getting research done. He proposed in August, random Tuesday, after lunch at my desk. Totally unexpected. Smiley smile

Yes we had been living together for 6 years and we always talked about how we wanted it. Where we would have it around what time of year. But when FH proposed it took me by total surprise!! He proposed at our house on Friday 12/9 and he wanted to do it before we went to his families christmas party the next day, but I had NO clue it was coming any time soon.

Yes. We bought a house together about 2 years ago, and I thought it was going to be coming soon then. But it didn't. Then his brother got engaged and FH didn't want to do anything while we were waiting for that, so I waited even longer. Then after FBIL&SIL were married, I thought surely, it would happen. By the time he actually asked me I had totally given up on the whole damn thing, lol. So yeah, I was surprised!

We'd been talking about getting married but I truly didn't think it would happen until after 1yr of living together. Well, 6 months after I moved in and the day after the disastrous beginning to our trip to Italy, he proposed. I was shocked since I didn't think he would propose so soon after I'd moved in. I should've gotten the hint, though, after he kept telling me that the trip was going to get better. However, after 23 hours of delays, layovers, missed ferries, and chartering boats I was too tired to think.

Yes! We went on vacation and purchased the ring together and I thought he was going to wait until we got back to ask (and plan something) because I wanted him to talk to my mom first (since my dad passed away in 2004) and he ended up surprising me the next day on our balcony! All I could think that he was going to drop the ring (he was holding just the ring, no box) into the ocean (we were on a cruise) and we would never see it again!

I knew it was coming at some point, I just didn't know when. We had went to look at rings about a year and a half before he proposed because he wanted to get an idea of what I liked. So I knew that he was thinking about it, I just didn't know when it was going to happen. When it did, I was totally surprised because he did it in front of my mom, my grandma, his parents and his brothers. Luckily they all knew it was going to happen so my mom had her camera ready and got pictures of the proposal Smiley smile
