September 2020 wedding long Island

Christine, on May 22, 2020 at 1:47 AM Posted in New York Planning 1 2
Hi ladies! I’ve never wrote anything here before but I really need help and I’m hoping to get some honest opinions. My wedding is in the beginning of September on the east end of Long Island. Due to covid-19 I’m unsure what to do and it’s left me a little lost. My fiancé and I are expecting approximately 140 guest; half of them are either out of state or overseas. I’m worried they will keep postponing reopening until summer or even later. My biggest worry is when will the borders reopen... will everyone who enters or leaves the United States have to be put into quarantine? It will be 3 months till the wedding in just a few weeks. Should I be waiting that long to postpone? I sent save the dates back in December and I have yet to send the invitations. I feel bad for making my guests wait but a big part of me still has hope that this will end soon. Please, if anyone can give their honest opinion and help me see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Thank you,
Christine

    Hi, and welcome!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.

So, NYC is not even in phase 1, yet, but I think LI might be soon?

My guess is that large gatherings won't really be a thing for most of us until next year, so you might have to start looking at cutting your guest list. Masks will almost definitely be required, and distancing may be, as well. We just got hit way too hard, unfortunately.

That said... a lot of places won't even let you postpone for fall weddings, yet, so you need to contact your venue, see what their rules are, currently. They might not have rules, yet, but they'll still be able to give you more information than you currently have.

The best advice we have on the forums is: Have a Plan B, be flexible, and don't make decisions until you *have* to.

    Hi Christine,

I'm so sorry you're in this position. It's even more difficult for you because you're so close to one of the hot spots and you have international guests. With 50% of your guests traveling from outside NY state, I can't imagine that they'll all feel safe to do so by September. Have you asked any of your friends or family for (gentle) feedback on the subject? I also want to echo exactly what Rebecca said in the PP above. That's great advice.

You are definitely not alone in this situation. Here are two more discussions with NY brides who are planning (or postponing) September weddings:

Once you speak with your venue and determine your best option(s), you'll be able to make an informed decision re: sending invitations or a postponement announcement. If you decide to postpone, there are some existing discussions with other couples with various ideas/suggestions for communicating the change of plans to your guests:
