About

Located on the banks of the James River, Westover Plantation is a venue catering to weddings in Charles City, Virginia. Originally built midway through the 18th century, it has been hosting weddings for over 20 years. Both large and small celebrations are welcomed, with more intimate gatherings being given the opportunity to see the inside of the house.

Facilities and Capacity

Large gatherings can avail of the spacious lawn and large trees that border the property for an outdoor, tented celebration. Inside, 60 guests can enjoy a banquet meal or 100 can mingle at a standing reception. The proximity to the James River provides an opportunity for memorable wedding photos on the waterfront. Large parties can traverse the spacious grounds and enjoy cocktail hour as the sun sets over the expansive lawns. The recognizable ‘Westover doorway’ is yet another possible setting for wedding portraits. A get-ready room provides a private space, away from the busy celebrations, for the wedding party to use at their own convenience. Onsite parking is available. A wheelchair-accessible property, this estate offers guests exclusive access to the grounds, as well as certain areas of the house during the beginning of the reception.

Services Offered

Should a couple have a furry companion they wish to celebrate with, this venue is pet-friendly. Wireless connectivity allows the party to stay in touch with anyone who was unable to attend the occasion. Westover welcomes the different wedding businesses a couple chooses to help complement their day. Engagement parties and wedding showers can also be held at this estate.

Incredible Venue and Hosts

My daughter was married at Historic Westover on October 2. We were blessed with the most glorious weather and the most amazing setting. She always wanted an outside wedding. When searching for a Wedding site, we found Historic Westover and knew it was the perfect place. What we didn't know at the time was just how incredible the family is that lives and hosts weddings at their home . Andrea Erda and her family did everything possible to help make the day special. Andrea's experience, gentle guidance, support and suggestions on how to improve the day were always spot on. She uses the word "magical" often and it truly was just that. I received numerous calls and texts over the next few weeks expressing just how magical the wedding and the setting was. Everyone was in awe of the incredible location, the Historic home and it's significance. My daughter and her new husband loved every minute and I sincerely believe it made their wedding "dreams" come true. We couldn't be more pleased. I highly recommend this special place and the special people that live there!

Amazing Experience

A perfect place for us to spend our wedding day. We loved working with Westover and would do it all over again. Cannot recommend Andrea and the Westover enough. They did everything to make sure we had a beautiful day.

Spectacular destination!

My daughter and new son-in-law had the most beautiful wedding at historic Westover Plantation near Richmond, Virginia. The two-hundred-year-old home is an exquisite backdrop for an outdoor wedding and reception, and the owners are seasoned hosts, who share their property with pride and grace. I continue to receive compliments from our guests which I share with the lovely Westover venue. Everyone had such a good time and I am convinced that Westover set the tone of warm Southern hospitality. I completely recommend this place.

We are in recovery mode today from our daughter's wedding on Saturday (9/16/17) at Westover Plantation in Charles City, VA, but have to take the time to provide feedback on the venue and the owners of the plantation, Andrea & Rob Erda. First, the location alone is stunning - with gorgeous gardens, a majestic home, and a spot on the James River it would be hard to beat - but add to that the graciousness of the owners, and it made for a perfect evening. Every time I contacted Andrea with a question or concern, I received a prompt response and always a "can do" approach. We spent multiple evenings wandering around the plantation searching for the perfect spot for each of the wedding events (ceremony, reception, cocktail hour), and were always welcomed - even at 8:00 one evening while we "buried the bourbon" in the dark to follow the tradition for good weather. The day of the wedding was (thanks to the bourbon??) perfect - but Andrea and Rob both worked all day with the caterer, rental company, and everyone else to make sure things ran smoothly. They were even there at the very end handing out sparklers and making sure all of the guests got safely to the bus. I HIGHLY recommend this venue - an incredible location with wonderful hosts.

From the moment we stepped out of the car, we knew Westover was the place we were going to get married. Set right on the river and surrounded with beautiful gardens, it truly took our breath away. We looked at several other locations in the area, and there was no beating Westover's view. I could go on and on about how beautiful it is!

We met with owner, Andrea, who is as nice as they come and very knowledgable about the history of Westover and the area in general. They have hosted many wedding over the years, so she can answer pretty much any question you might have. I was a very hands on bride, and really wanted the freedom to choose my own vendors and decorate how I wanted, and Andrea was great about being flexible and letting me do my own thing.

I cannot recommend Westover enough, and will always treasure it!

We think there is no better wedding venue in the state or country! Look no further than Westover, it will forever hold a special place in our hearts. It is perfect for anyone looking for a classic, Virginia location, with beautiful river views, architecture, and history. Owners Andrea and Rob were so generous, helpful, and flexible in every aspect. The extra effort in coordinating all vendors and items needed for an "off-site" wedding was 100% worth it (and we were able to use vendors from both Richmond and Williamsburg/VA Beach). We, our families, and our 350+ guests were all very pleased. With only a handful of weddings per year, the majority of our guests had never visited Westover and still talk about what a wonderful evening it was.

One of our favorite wedding day memories was digging up the bourbon we had buried in Westover's garden (which the Erda's graciously allowed) with our families and wedding party, and sharing a special toast before the reception! My biggest worry was the weather, but thankfully our October wedding day was clear and warm. Weddings can be stressful and not everything turns out as planned, but we can 100% say that our entire experience with Westover could not have been better.

Our daughter used the beautiful and historic Westover Plantation for her evening wedding reception. The ceremony was held just down the road at the Westover Episcopal Church. Andrea the property owner was a delight to work with from beginning to end. She had suggestions for the various vendors we needed, but was open to new vendors she hadn't used before. There is a huge lawn in the front between the James River and the house with spectacular views and great photography options. We had a lighted 40 x 80 high peak pole tent with 100 guests. There was ample room for guests to tour the grounds, walk along the river, or just mingle and visit in the yard. The house itself was beautiful and was open to tour during our cocktail hour. The entire area was very well manicured and maintained. The bride and her attendants were able to use a large room upstairs to get ready for the wedding and she was able to use the grand staircase to meet her father before the wedding. Formal pics were taken both inside and outside and were stunning.
I would recommend using a large quiet generator for power, as we blew breakers with less than 1/2 of our lighting up. We figured this out when they were putting the tent up, and had ample time to get one there. You also need to provide portable restroom facilities, as there are none on the property for guest use. I would also add lighting along the path from the tent to the parking lot. It was a very dark evening, and it was difficult for some of our older guests to maneuver to where the bride and groom had their grand exit.
We had many out of town guests from all over the country, so they appreciated all of the history, and being able to wander around and check out all of the outbuildings. Our feedback was only positive...everybody loved it and said it was the most beautiful place for our reception.
I would highly recommend the Westover Plantation. Andrea was a pleasure to work with, and our evening was perfect!

Westover was a gorgeous spot for our sunset wedding ceremony and reception site. The grounds are simply beautiful. All of our guests said it was the most beautiful riverside wedding they'd ever been to. If you are looking for a southern plantation feel, this is it. No other plantation around the Richmond area has the view Westover does!

Andrea, the plantation owner, is very friendly and helpful throughout the entire process. She is very hands on with the details and has a lot of experience doing so. Her kids and her husband are also a pleasure to be around. We were able to choose all of our own vendors for everything, but she has recommendations if you need them. The venue can accommodate a large number of guests and you are able to get dressed and ready on site which was important to us. Guests are also allowed to tour the house during cocktail hour.

I have nothing but good things to say. Everything turned out perfect and we can't wait to go back to visit!

Westover Plantation is a beautiful venue, located on the banks of the James River. It is large enough for any size wedding, yet comfortable for a small wedding, as well. The owners are very helpful and professional. On the day of the wedding they were friendly and available. The owners were gracious enough to give my guests access to the mansion during the cocktail hour which my guests enjoyed immensely. The room for the bride was large enough for nine bridesmaids, two photographers, and several family members to move around in comfortably. Mary Jo Kahn

Westover Plantation has become one of our favorite locations to coordinate and plan events with. The grounds are run by the family who occupies the home, and they personally take care of everything from grounds management to the walkthrough, to the tours of the historic home as well as overseeing the event setup. If any questions arise, they are very prompt and concise in responses and we are never left wondering about any of the questions that pop up. Many times, as planners, we are left to our own devices to plan the logistics and setup of events as questions are left unanswered or there is no one present who manages the grounds, and many times we have to make educated decisions due to lack of communication from venues, but that is never the case at Westover. We certainly feel like we are working as a team and never alone. We know first hand that this is the way that every family and couple feels who has chosen this venue for their wedding day as well. We would be remiss not to mention that view on the property! We can all be slightly jealous that this is the view they wake up to every morning- so stunning that we want just a piece of it for that special day! We look forward to working with Westover and the Erda family later this year, and hopefully many more times to come!
