About

The Historic Monticello Hotel “Home of Jefferson Hospitality” in the heart of historic Charlottesville one block from the Downtown Mall, was built in 1926 as a 5 star hotel, offering a stunning setting for unforgettable weddings. This historic landmark blends exquisite Virginia architecture with modern amenities, ensuring a truly exceptional experience on your special day.

Host your wedding or special event at the prime location that set the standard for grace and elegance in Charlottesville a century ago. Each of the two extraordinary reception rooms is an architectural masterpiece capable of hosting up to 120 guests for weddings, welcome parties, galas, celebrations, seated dinners, cocktail receptions or presentations.

The Monticello Room (historically the Main Dining Room) with its ornate ceiling, French doors and stunning detail, flows directly from the spacious Hotel Lobby creating an open yet formal progression for guests. The Lobby and Reception Room provide a panoramic view of the historic Albemarle County Courthouse and Court Square through the large wavy pane windows admitting abundant natural light.

The room’s soaring verticality is defined by majestic, paneled pilasters crowned with gilded Corinthian capitals. A traditional chair rail frames the lower walls, while the eyes are drawn upward to a prominent fluted frieze, and on to the lunette frieze on the entablature adjacent the capitals. The coved ceiling curves gently upward from the entablature, creating a soft, vaulted effect. The flat portions of the coffered ceiling are adorned with delicate, classical swag and ribbon plaster garlands, adding an artistic rhythm to the geometric grid. Ornamental plaster moldings accent each of the six vaulted bays, including circular ceiling medallions from which the classic chandeliers hang.

Every detail—down to the elegant, rosette-accented doorway trim—captures the true spirit of 1920s grandeur and timeless Jeffersonian symmetry.

The Thomas Jefferson Ballroom (historically referred to as the Thomas Jefferson Rose Ballroom) on the mezzanine level, is directly above the Monticello Room allowing easy flow between the two spaces.

Steeped in timeless grandeur, our historic grand ballroom offers an unparalleled setting of refined elegance. This magnificent space seamlessly marries old world romance with sophisticated architecture, featuring five Palladian windows each flanked by double fluted pilasters with gilded capitals. Beneath the dazzling glow of crystal empire chandeliers, the polished hardwood floor invites guests to dance the night away. Encircled by the stately fluted columns, the ballroom exudes a majestic atmosphere that transforms any gathering into a legendary event.

The grand Ballroom is a masterpiece of neoclassical design and was built to echo the classical refinement and elegance of Thomas Jefferson’s nearby estate. Bathed in natural light from a stunning series of ten foot wide Palladian concentric arched windows similar to those on the sides of the White House, the Ballroom offers a setting of unmatched historic elegance. The room features a soaring ceiling framed by deep, intricate modillion cornice molding, which draws the eye upward and emphasizes the room's stately proportions. Anchored by gilded Corinthian fluted pilasters, the space feels both open and intimate. As evening falls, the grand crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow across the room and it’s exquisite original walnut, maple and oak floor, creating a magical atmosphere for weddings, balls, galas, and exclusive events.
