Is this tacky?
Hi, FH and I can't afford a DJ, so we can't use one. (unless there is one that only charges like 200.00, but I doubt it....) I was wondering if using an ipod is tacky? Thanks:)

How many people are you having? Is this just for the ceremony / reception or both?

No I don't think it's tacky at all. Only thing is if you want to have a certain first dance, father daughter dance, etc. you will need to designate somebody in your party to play those songs at the right time and annouce it. If not, I'd just make a great mix hook it up hit play and have a great time! That's what my friend did for her wedding and there was about 50 guests and it worked out fine.

Well you may not get the sound you want without a professional sound system, but if you can't afford a DJ then you can't afford one. I'd say having an Ipod with music playing is much better than no music at all.

You could always post an ad on Craigslist looking for someone within your price range. Some people are hurting for work and may take you up on it. Some money is better than no money. Right? Otherwise I think an iPod would be just fine.

Just be careful when doing the craigslist ad. Make sure you check references all that good stuff. Good Luck!

Not really sure where you are having your wedding at. But here in Miami you can get a DJ for 25.00 an hour. So if your reception was going to be 4 hrs. you would be fine.
The Craigslist idea is great!!
I am not into ipods and stuff. I don't know how they work. But I have seen my FH hook his up to the stero and play the songs that he has on their. Maybe it will work.

My mom went to a wedding reception last year that used an ipod and she said it worked really well... like someone previously stated though that you should have someone designated to make sure your specific songs play when you want them to...

Here in Miami all the clubs use laptops. You can hook it up to speakers. It works well at the clubs. That way you can have the songs saved in order on the laptop as you want them to play.

If you can't afford it, and can't find one on CL then it should be fine. Just make sure that whoever you put in charge of the music makes sure that your intoxicated guests don't come start changing songs on the ipod! lol

Thank you ladies, Ellen, I don't really like to get too specific on boards, not that I don't trust you ladies but you never know with spammers, I will PM you and let you know where I am at. :)

I think its totally fine and a lot of people are doing this to save money! I read in a bridal magazine to make sure you have a second ipod as a backup just in case and be sure to label your playlists accordingly ie: ceremony, cocktail hr etc... Oh and take that 200$ to rent a sound system and you will be good to go. I also read that when ppl sent out the invitations there was a place on the rsvp card for a song they'd like to here and the guests loved this. Have fun! Lastly, appoint someone to keep an eye on it and to announce you etc...

we're renting a PA system for about $65, then we're using a friends laptop....for the reception and ceremony....and we're making playlists, that way songs are played at the right time, and my friends boyfriend is going to run the laptop...so i figure since he's already invited(her 1 lol), i figure i would give him 50-75...he agreed, saying he'd already be there, and since they can't dance b/c of her back, and it's her laptop, it was no big deal...even if he hadn't volunteered, we would have just done it ourselves...

I never thought of using my iPod for my music. We have a very small budet for our wedding $3,000 and this would save us tons as at our reception place they have a sound system so I could just hook it up and go. Awesome!

Definitely not tacky... Just have one of your audiophile friends man the ipod... or designate an MC...
