Need some advice about food

Emily, on May 11, 2026 at 6:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 2
So my mother-in-law plans on cooking for me we're thinking about doing barbecue like cooking the meat a day before the wedding because how long it takes what kind of meats do you think would be good for barbecuing and sides and also what kind of drinks would be good and desserts. Just need a little advice, I could get a caterer but my mom-in-law wants to cook for me and I wanted to let her to make it cheaper on me

This is a HUGE liability unless she is food safe certified and insured. I would strongly advise against this. If food isn’t temped and stored and reheated properly, people could get really sick.

I agree with Sagan. Not only is it a huge liability but there are several other things you'd have to figure out that might not make it worth it.
    1. Will your wedding venue allow this? Where we got married the person providing all of the food had to be licensed and approved by the vendor. My photographer also offered a candy bar and the venue originally was iffy on allowing her to handle this portion. She was able to provide a proof of liability so if anything did happen she was ensured. Otherwise they wouldn't have allowed it.

    2. Who is going to handle preparing the food the day of? Just because it's being cooked in advance doesn't mean you eliminate work. Someone will have to be responsible for reheating everything.
    3. How do you plan to keep any warm food warm and any cold food cold?

    4. How are you going to handle any possible food allergies? For example if someone would be highly allergic to eggs you'd have to make sure all of that person's food doesn't accidentally have any cross-contamination issues or you could be facing serious health issues.
    5. Who will be responsible for setup, serving, and cleanup?

These are just a few of the questions you'd need to be able to tackle.
