no, I have only been to one wedding in the past 15 years that had a actual band and that girls family had major $$$$$. If you know someone, go for it. If you dont want one or cant afford it, dont fret over it.

nope! I hardly see anyone with a band anymore. A DJ works just as well and is sometimes more enjoyable

I've seen them at weddings I've attended, but I don't like bands that play other peoples music..I like the original stuff the Dj plays! I've also heard that band can cost and arm and a leg..the one my dad so desperately wanted us to have was like $5000 or more! our Dj is like $1500 and that from 5pm until 2 am with lights and stuff..

I am having a band. My FH uncle is a member. Otherwise we would not be. I think most weddings have DJs as appose to a band.

I've been to a million weddings, and I've never been to one with a band, so it's definitely not necessary!

Bands have their downsides, they can only play what they know, are way more expensive than a DJ, and there are very few bands that can cover a really good song without ruining it. If you know what kind of music you want played and it is a certain genre, then you are fine. But, if you want a mix of dance, classic, rock ballad, country, you are going to have a difficult time finding one that can handle it all. A DJ also has the ability to gauge the crowd and figure out what would be most suitable to get people up and dancing, they can also take requests.

They're not needed, but they're a ton of fun! Then again, I was a music major before I got into photography, so I can't say that I'm not a little biased. It's too bad you don't live closer to here, because I know an amazing band here that is pretty affordable and does 3 full sets of different styles. I love them! A dj will usually be able to cater more to the mood and pick different songs, but a band will create a mood. It's really up to you. :)

They do tend to be a little more expensive. Also you need to consider that they have to take breaks and will they provide music in between. I have seen a combination of a band and a DJ which helps with that problem. If you consider a band go to see them play somewhere if possible before you hire them. Also make sure if you do hire them that the lead singer will be the one who will be performing at the wedding.

I used to play in a wedding band and now I'm a DJ, so IMO if you have both you would have really unique entertainment that you do not see much in today's economic climate. Roughly speaking, a band will cost 4-5X more than a DJ and to add a DJ to a band would cost an additional 20% or so. If you have the budget, adequate space at your venue, and enjoy good and diverse music, go with both.

I don't think it's nessascarry, I know FH and I have been thinking about getting a band but it really takes thought into what band if you want to try and make your guests happy and like it.. but do what you can afford, guest aren't going to go expecting a band.. I don't believe anyone will even think of a band really...

Speaking on behalf of DJ's you can find some thate are quite skilled and experienced that dont charge an arm and a leg...for a basic wedding package for 4 hrs usually is $600 plus...with club lighting, sound, fog, and industry standard equipment... hope this helps

No, I don't think you need a band. There are some very talented DJs that provide great entertainment. With that said, I always support live musicians. They add a special touch to an event that can't be duplicated.

I don't think a band is needed. If you can find a great DJ that would be great. I think they have more variety anyway.

I've always looked at it from a budget perspective. If you have the money, go with a band... it's an experience that puts your event on a higher level (as long as the band was good). Like arriving in a horse drawn carriage or stretch limo is a step up from arriving in a personal vehicle.
Budget dictates every choice you have. As a DJ, I'd suggest getting the best one you can afford, if you go that route, but a band & a DJ (when the band goes on break) is the cream of the crop. Is a band needed??? Of course not, but it's cool.
Some of the best weddings have high tech DJ's that can "rock" the crowd with songs played the way you remember them, and most don't take breaks (major advantage). DJ's are typically MUCH less expensive than a band too.
As with DJ's, some cheap bands are priced to get you to hire them, but might be a disaster when you hear them play. They're cheap for a reason... Good luck!

Chosing a band or Dj is based on the type of wedding your are having and your budget. Dj's are ok but if you are trying to pull of a more classy or elegant type wedding go with a band - just make sure to go and listen to a few before you decide. I was at a wedding a few weeks ago and they had a band that was fabulous - they sang some of the latest songs and sound just like the original artists.

They are definitey not needed. A great D.J will do perfectly fine. But it all depends on the type of reception atmosphere you are going for. We want more of a fun relaxed atmosphere that the D.J can gauge as we go to keep things fun the whole night. As stated above a band can only do so much whereas a D.J can play anything that you want.
