White Bridesmaid Dresses? What do you think?

Jamie, on August 18, 2011 at 12:02 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 25

My FH and I were discussing what our BM and GM would wear and he thought it would be very cool to have all the guys in black (black everything- suit/shirt/bowtie) and the girls in all white. I would want their dresses to be tea-length- to not be too bridal. We are have a wedding in the evening in January and in candlelight (maybe.) Any thoughts on this idea? I kind of like the modern edge...

I wouldn't go with white for the BMs dresses maybe like silver or something but not white. Im one that doesn't like anyone wearing white BUT me on the BIG DAY but thats just me tho.

I think this is something that is becoming more popular, I personally do not like it. I think I should be the only one wearing white on my wedding day. That being said, here are some pics on how the girls would probably look like.

It's definitely a personal decision and if you're completely comfortable with it go for it! One of the things I don't like is in the last picture, can you tell who the bride is?

Did you see the David Tutera Grecian wedding? He put all of the wedding party in white. It was very romantic looking. So, if the God of all weddings will do it then I would imagine it's acceptable these days.

I'm up in the air about it. You would have to really pull it off well so that it didn't look awkward.

Yeah I am not a fan. And not every woman looks good in white. It makes you look heavier.

Its a personal preference (sp?) but I personally don't like it. if black and white are your colors why not put your girls in black dresses with a white sash? Like Natacha I want to be the only one wearing white on my wedding day. You can have your FH and his GM in all black tuxes/suits and have their bouts in all white, maybe a little spray of baby's breath or a single white calla lily... (those are the only white flowers I can think of right off the bat lol)?

If you're wearing a colored wedding dress for your big day, then go for it! I agree with the PP's - you need to stand out. If all of you are in white, you need a way to stand out of the crowd. Try white and black printed dresses for the BM's - that looks cute.

I was a fan of this, and actually posted a question about it too! Alas my sister (MOH) did not love the idea, mostly b/c it looks cool for the pics but depending on the style of the dress when the bridesmaids are moving around during the reception it would be easy for guests to get confused as to which white dress was the bride. My sister and I look a lot alike, so I can totally invision guests asking her when she changed out of the wedding dress lol. The understandable confusion, given that her husband is a groomsman, would get some really great gossip going quick! FWIW if I was to do the white on white idea I would make the bridesmaid dresses tea length, the third pic posted above by Natacha would be awkward as I can't even tell which one is the bride.

I think if you keep the BM dresses short or tea length (assuming you gown is long), then you should look different enough in pictures and to your guests.

And give the bridesmaids different bouquets than yours. I think the top picture is elegant, but with everyone in long dresses and everyone holding the same bouquet, it does make the bride blend in.

Im not a fan, i want to stand out on my day and be the only one in white. plus, in my opinion, i would do long dress in jan, especailly with candlelight, i think that short dresses are more appropiate (sp?) for summer/ spring weddings, but thats just me.

on a historical note regarding white bms: all of the bridesmaids used to wear white so as distract/ confuse evil spirits away from the bride

It looks pretty, but I don't like how the bride doesn't stand out immediately in pictures. Personally, it's not something I would choose.

I think I had heard about that historical reference! Pretty cool.

My dress is a ballgown and I would want my BM in below-the knee not floor length, in a dressier fabric- not summery at all. It would look different I think! I don't have a strong opinion on being the only one wearing white- I just thought it might look interesting.

I think it's pretty. But I would do something to make sure you are set apart from them. I have seen some wehre it's a little hard to tell the difference between the bride and the bridal party.

I think if you're trying to go modern edge, then it wouldn't look bad. How is your dress(big, princess, mermaid?) You want to make sure you stand out. lol I personally don't like white on bm's, but then again I don't like white period. I'm wearing ivory. lol

I think it will look beautiful! To make them slightly different you can always add a black sash to each one. I'm also one that doesn't care who wears white to my wedding, my guests will know I am the bride while I'm standing up at the front of everyone.

One thing to consider, you're having a january wedding-which means people wont be able to get a natural tan if they want, which most girls like to have when they wear white. Obviously, as a january bride (i was one too) you just either decide not to care to go fake. Do you really want your BMS to have to deal with that? most girls just look better in a white dress with a tan.

I would consider a silver or grey. it would give a very nice, classy look and look great with the guys in black

What about if you wear white and they all wear creme??? I really like the way that looks!

I like the look of all white though too - it's very classic. And you said in you OP that you would do tea length dresses for them, so I think you will still stand out Smiley smile
