I'm going to call the former friend 'Daisy' so you can keep up. Me and Daisy have been friends for 6 years. She recently reunited with a previous lover and they started dating. She randomly announced that they were getting married only after dating for literally 6 weeks. She asked me to be her maid of honor. I gladly accepted the honor and because they planned to get married in December (she announced it in August) I immediately started planning her Bridal shower! Her guest list went from 20 to 85 people. I ordered a catering company, tables and chairs rental, paid for floral arrangements for the centerpieces, hired a photographer and bought all the champagne and decoration. In October she called me asking if I could pick her up she was stranded. I went to get her and while waiting at the light, I saw a man in a suit and a woman in a long flowy white gown crossing the street. They went to the courthouse to get married! So they get in the car, continued in comment section

I was totally with it up till the she called me and said she was stranded- but flowy white dress/marriage thing- that's a red flag.

Then the "she moved and no one knows where she went?"

And the fact that there were 65 people- and NONE of whom contacted you to find out the actual details once she said it was cancelled?

    Something just smells funny.

I would sent "thank you" notes to everyone who you initially invited. And I'd include something along the lines of "thank you for not showing up. Since daisy and Xx are already married the bridal shower was fake anyways."

Go to the magistrate court and ask them if they think it's worth pursuing. It's around $95 to take someone to small claims court where I live, and if you win you get it back. I had something similar happen to me, but she moved out of state and I would've had to go to court in the county she lived in.

Yeah she wanted it canceled but the bride insisted she went ahead with the party. She paid for all the shit that's the problem.

Like who calls a friend and says "I'm stranded" but really got fake married.

    how did they get there?

    Who dropped them off?

    Did they walk?

    Who were their witnesses?

    I HAVE QUESTIONS!!!

And no selfies of said married couple?

pictures of the venue? pictures of decorations?

you didn't eat any of the food you paid for?

Come on girl- give me something.

I'm not a lawyer, but my opinion is that unfortunately for OP, I don't think there's much here for a legal case. Also, the magistrate's office can't give legal advice (if you ask them if they think it's worth pursuing). When I filed a claim in the past and had questions about the paperwork/notification procedure (nothing to do with the claim/case itself) they kept saying "we can't give legal advice". I wasn't asking for legal advice! I was asking for answers as far as the magistrate process works. But anyway, this is just a really crappy situation and I think OP is out the money. OP, you're a better person than me to have kept planning a "shower"/"celebration" after she said "talk to you later!" I'd be livid though and tell everyone I could get in touch with that they are already married.

My son is an attorney, I asked him and he said IF you could get a case filed, the judge would likely be pissy pisserson at both parties what with no contracts and what would be referred to as "hearsay."

An expensive lesson learned to be sure and I hope you got to eat a lot of good food.

Again, I am sorry this happened to you.

@JoRocka I picked them up across the street from the Long Beach Courthouse. (I live in California) . They Ubered there and said she didn't have enough on her debit card to get them back home. So she called me. She said meet her at the chevron gas station. That was were they were headed when I saw them crossing the street, to the chevron gas station. They didn't get "fake married" they actually got married that day I picked them up but still planned to have a fake ceremony in December without telling her guest beforehand. I only talked to her grandmother and brpthers and 1 of her bridesmaids I knew very well. I literally called and went to every known address of her family and friend and the only person willing to talk was her grandmother and she wouldn't give me any contact info on her. She said she was told Daisy had cancelled it but was unsure why.

She decided to cut ties with you and fuck you over after you told her it's rude not to let everyone know they are married. Sounds like you are much better off with her in your rearview.

Of course I ate the food. I was stuck with it for days! I have photos. They didn't post a married photo because they weren't telling anyone. I'm not sure if they have photos up now because I'm blocked. I'm not sure who was their witness, I honestly didn't care to ask because I was pissed they were going to lie to their guest.

I'm so sorry this happened, but im not sure why you are still using a fake name. If they had the "wedding" in december they are already "married". I would blast her real name and hope someone finds it. I would have said shit right after she cancelled the shower.

I work for a Register of Deeds in NC; we issue marriage licenses. You can probably call the agency in your county that issues the ML to confirm if they got married or not. You probably can't get a certified copy but you may be able to get an uncertified copy

KatieD: that's not "petty" that's a crime. I'm sure OP doesn't want a criminal record out of this, and if she does try to sue it would be a Very Bad Fact in that case as well.
