How did you choose your first dance song?

Amanda, on December 28, 2011 at 1:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

This might seem simple, but FH and I are having the most difficult time finding a song that we feel fits us. We have completely different taste in music, which causes the first problem. The second problem is that he wants songs I don't really care for and I want songs he doesn't really care for. I would like to find a song that makes me somewhat emotional (I am a sap) and that FH and I both like.

How did you pick yours? Did anybody have a difficult time finding theirs?

I didn't have to hard a time choosing ours as it was the first song I dubbed "Our Song". It's silly, but we chose "Can I have this Dance?" from High School Musical 3. He was fine with it because it represents us as a couple.

Maybe you could start in one of the genre's that you and your FH like with a theme of some sort and let Google bring stuff to you.

What's more important to you, the music or the lyrics? For us, it was the lyrics...so we don't care that there are pre-mature high schoolers singing the song, haha. Maybe you can find a song you like, and if it has good lyrics - you could sell it to your FH that way?

I'm having the same problem! My FH and I are complete opposites with our music choices, it took awhile to even agree on a song for our wedding website. I've been trying to browse WW's First Dance Songs but the list is soo long..

I have had the hardest time picking songs also! Is there a type of music that you guys can agree on?? Maybe start with the baby steps and work your way up!! I am glad our first dance son was an easy pick it will be Eric Church's You make it look so easy... I heard it when the cd first came out a while ago and knew before we were even engaged that was "our song" Or maybe just try eliminating things to start like he may say "No country" and you say "No to a band" Good luck!!!

The lyrics to our song describe perfectly how I feel about marrying Al and our relationship.

"I Am Free" by Mariah Carey....tells exactly how I feel.

We were at Lilith Fair and Mary J Blige was on stage when we said "i love you". The song she was singing "Be without you"

There was no question in either of our minds that we would have our first dance to that song.

Is there maybe a movie the both of you like that you can pull a song from? Or a favorite song from childhood that speaks to you both? We picked an old school song that we both love!

Oh no Karla-- Maybe you can find something you both agree on? It would be horrible to dance to a song I hate..

We chose God Gave Me You by Blake Shelton. We both love country music. If you can't agree you can always do old school music. Like Frank Sanatra or Dean Martin. Good luck.

I'm having trouble picking out a first dance song also... but I think it's important to take a step back and not get too wrapped up in "defining yourselves" with this 1 song.

I was throwing out entire songs, because a couple of lines weren't accurate to our lives... but then I realized that this doesn't have to be a song about US, it can be a song about the married path we're embarking down, or the dreams and hopes for our future.

Basically, when I stopped looking for a perfect song for who we are as a couple, and instead am looking for a song to usher us into married life, I felt like the stress faded a little and that my options were more open.

We are dancing to Keeper of the Stars by Tracy Byrd. It's sort of "our song".

We had a tough time. In part, this was because so many of the usual first dance songs assume a male/female couple, which we are not. In part, it was because we wanted to have a swing dance, but NotFroofy doesn't like a lot of the traditional swing music. We finally ended up with Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love," which was perfect for us.

We didn't have a hard time, as we both knew that our first dance song would be "our song" We were driving together to his house while we were dating each other long distance (5.5 hr drive) And we were listening to country music. He likes Rock and I like R&B, country. Anyhow we were saying how we needed a song. And God bless the broken road came to mind. We pulled to song up on YouTube and it just fit us perfectly. I hope you can figure out something that works for both of you.

We are dancing to "Remember When" by Alan Jackson. It has been our song since we started dating almost eight years ago.

For those of you that found your song easily, you are lucky!! We have never had a song. I am into alternative and punk rock and he is a country boy. That's what makes it difficult.

@Jessica L. - I think you are right about not getting too caught up in finding a song that defines our entire relationship. Broadening our criteria might just be what we need. Thanks!

I am having a miserable time picking a song, I have a FH who hates to make decisions, tomorrow night we are meeting with the DJ and I am hoping he has some ideas that he might not be sharing with me. He is a huge Pearl Jam fan but there is no romantic pearl jam song. We want to keep the vibe jazzy and standard so we don't get my family all riled up with the music so I have a short list of songs that I think would be appropriate if he doesn't come up with an idea. They are

Iron and Wine - Love and Some Verses

Ettta James - Come Rain or Come Shine

Billie Holiday Come Rain or Come Shine

    Michael Buble - Everything

    Michael Buble- Feeling Good

    Adele - Love Song

Adele- Make you Feel My love

    Beatles- In My Life

    John Legend - Ordinary People

Eddie Veder Dearm a Little Dream

Me and my FH didn't really have a hard time - our taste are similar but we pretty much picked "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls only because come to find out when the first came out even though we didn't know each other we both loved the song and would blast it in our room - his brothers would make fun of him for it but he loved the fact that I loved the song as well so we chose that

FH and I had been throwing songs back and forth and one of us always didnt like it for whatever reason...

I had won tickets off the radio to see Blue October on their acoustic tour and when they played the song Calling You I turned to FH and said. 'What do you think? I think we found our song?' And it stuck!
