Empty wedding fund woes

So 2016 threw a wrench into our wedding plans big time this month! Our Ford Ranger (our ONLY means of transportation) unexpectedly died on us a couple weeks ago and put us in a very tight spot! My fiance recently bought out a friend's cleaning business and he works every single night without fail, so we were desperate for our truck to get fixed. We ended up needing a $650 motor, but were lucky enough to have mechanic friends who did the work for free. We go to get the truck and it starts, but won't move! Well turns out we now have a cracked transmission pump and something wrong with the alternator too. So we just shucked out another $1000 to the transmission shop and should have our baby back by Thursday! So here we are, back to zero on our wedding fund again! I am so worried our plans for this summer will all fall through due to this set back. FH won't even entertain talk about anything wedding related because he thinks we are screwed. (More in comments)

I had to come back because I'm again- floored and flabbergasted that someone seems to think all flights to the same location seem to cost the same.

    I just- I can't. EW- seriously?

You do realize we live all over the country and it's NOT going to cost the same.

@LG- Hawaii- vacation- honeymoon or wedding w/ reception are all incompatible with "living pay check to pay check"

@EW-basic health care is, doctor's visits, hospital visits, and the like. However, prescriptions, optometrists, physios, dentists and the like are not covered. Supplemental health care is extremely expensive, and if your lucky, you have a full-time job with benefits, if not, you pay out of pocket. Yes, you can claim it on your taxes, but it's not worth much.

For what it's worth- tickets flying Friday and coming back Monday for a single adult:

I have a variety of options- so let me list them for you

    Newark: anywhere from 800$- 2400$

    Philly- ****

    JFK 700- 2700

    They go upwards over 3K.

I'm actually planning a trip to CA in a few months and right now my tickets generally are holding fast at 600$ round trip.

Not everyone lives near the destination of choice.

For everyone other than EW, I recommend getting life insurance early, before any chronic conditions develop that could affect your premiums. The longer you wait, the more expensive it can be monthly.

@Sour Shoes check out Biolife and see if they have a plasma donation center in your area. It is usually $20 for the first donation and $50 for the second donation within a week. You have to complete both donations within the same 7 day period (meaning the cycle resets every sunday) to get the $50 vs $20

    Thanks Jo!

    ETA Thanks OP.

I'm not a fan of needles. I was curious to what everyone was talking about. I never heard of donating plasma for money. Just looking to educate myself.

I've had life insurance since I was 20. My father was the original beneficiary, when he died my stepmom became the beneficiary, when FH and I updated our policies to join them, he became my beneficiary and I became his. Check with your insurance agent, you don't need to be married to have your FH as a beneficiary.

@ EW - Every time you make a comment or give shitty advice, I'm sitting here shaking my head. I can't believe someone your age is so irresponsible.

@ OP - I'm not going to say anything to you since you've received great advice....several times.

I know I don't but I'm not going to support him until we are officially married. Personal choice. He offered to add me onto his and I declined.

Yes I'm okay with my family footing the bill. If anyone in my family passed away I would pay for them. Just cremate me and throw the ashes somewhere. I don't need a big to do. Keep it cheap.

@JoRocka- yes I realize not everyone can get to Hawaii for $300. In my original post I said it was affordable FROM WHERE I LIVE. Just like if I lived in Florida I would probably go to the Bahamas and if I lived in NY I'd go to Bermuda.

FFS, it's not supporting him, it's adding him as a beneficiary. It's literally just putting his name down on a piece of paper. My stepmom didn't even know I had added her as my beneficiary. Are you so daft that you cannot see the forest for the trees?

You are pledging your life to someone to be life partners, but you won't get life insurance because you don't want his name on the policy as your beneficiary. Good luck!

ETA: it's still $10K to cremate someone. At least that's how much it cost to cremate my dad. Luckily, he had INSURANCE!

EW - Even cremation is expensive. And just tossing your ashes isn't as easy as you think. Trust me from my own experiences.

I've had life insurance since I was 22. My own policy, paid for by my own money. I have no children and had no spouse back then. I didn't want my mom or brothers stuck with the expenses had I been in an accident or been shot on the job (was planning on being a cop back then). It's just responsible adulting.

Also EW, I live 20 minutes from Ohare airport. H and I went to Hawaii for our HM. Round-trip, our entire FLIGHT cost was $2600. We left at 6am on a Monday and we returned at 430am on a Monday. That was the cheapest we could get. We booked in April before our October HM.

Some days I seriously wish I had Erin's bubble to live in. I'm sure others on this site have had an even shittier life than I have, but it was definitely crappy. It's such a luxury to be so oblivious.

EW- if you're living pay check to pay check guess where you go to vacation?

Nowhere- you stay the fuck at home and save your money. Vacations are a luxury you cannot afford if you have no safety net.

I'm truly floored that you are 37 years old and do not care about your future. We are perilously close to an economic collapse.- the likes of which OUR generation has never seen- job security is not a thing- the banks-property values- the roof over your head- all actually in danger.

The fact that you have wards in your care and you don't care? easily one of the most irresponsible things I've ever heard- Christ i'm worried about what i'm going to do for my fucking HORSE.

A HORSE. Not a living human being- but a horse.

The fact you are not concerned about these things- is insanely unsettling.

I've been self employed for almost 35 years and I have ALWAYS had insurance (health, not life, since I have no dependents) and emergency savings. There have been years where I literally made under the poverty level, but couldn't even qualify to get the unemployment I'd paid into the system because the way our company was structured.

I am honestly stunned by some of the posts here and the lack of financial acumen they exhibit.
