Empty wedding fund woes

So 2016 threw a wrench into our wedding plans big time this month! Our Ford Ranger (our ONLY means of transportation) unexpectedly died on us a couple weeks ago and put us in a very tight spot! My fiance recently bought out a friend's cleaning business and he works every single night without fail, so we were desperate for our truck to get fixed. We ended up needing a $650 motor, but were lucky enough to have mechanic friends who did the work for free. We go to get the truck and it starts, but won't move! Well turns out we now have a cracked transmission pump and something wrong with the alternator too. So we just shucked out another $1000 to the transmission shop and should have our baby back by Thursday! So here we are, back to zero on our wedding fund again! I am so worried our plans for this summer will all fall through due to this set back. FH won't even entertain talk about anything wedding related because he thinks we are screwed. (More in comments)

Living above one's means is not the same as being able to afford something.

I know it's illegal. Just saying people do it. You don't need to give me links to the CA state laws because I honestly don't care. If my Dad wants to dump me in the ocean I'm all for it. In fact he asked me to dump him at this special spot on a mountain in the area.

@Jessie- Actually I do support him. I'm the bread winner and pay for just about everything. I don't think he should get a payout though. We share a bank account. That's enough for now.

@Sour- because he is not my husband yet. I will once we are married. Nothing wrong with that. A lot of people do not combine anything until they are officially married.

@BeachDreams: synopsis: OP depleted their emergency and wedding fund, we all gave good, sound financial advice. EW came in and gave irresponsible advice because "it's not what she'd do". Fuckery ensued, EW is justifying the fact that she cannot adult, more fuckery.

You know EW- you could have been a millionaire 2 times over at this point if you had actually been working on it.

Type in economic collapse into youtube- and you can watch hundreds of people reporting on the signs that we are going to have down turn like the great depression.

Even if it's a little smoke blowing- it's still scary ass shit and you're just breezing it on buy selfishly thinking about nothing but your little outings and nothing for your childrens current lives or what they will be if something actually horrific happens.

**I should edit- this is a working theory- but it's SUCH an unknown- know one has any fucking clue if it will happen. **

Do you know if the sheet of ice on Greenland slides off the continent into the ocean it could do one of two things- destroy the entire East Coast- OR all of the East Side of Europe? Do you know what that would do to the world if that happened?

I'd be fucked. You'd be fucked. We'd all be fucked.

I don't think there's anything wrong with donating plasma since it helps others, by I agree you shouldn't depend on it for wedding savings (or any savings). I donated plasma for awhile but I knew to never rely on that money because you might not always be eligible. I have a job that covers my expenses and allows me to put money into savings. Good thing, too, because I ended up having low hemoglobin issues and I'm not eligible to donate plasma anymore. So, I think it's a worthwhile way to earn a little extra spending cash, but I firmly believe no one should rely on it because it is not dependable, and it's pretty desperate to rely on it.

Umm, living above your means = not being able to afford shit because you are in debt. Do you understand how debt comes into play? It happens when you spend more money than you have. It's actually very simple.

Your savings isn't even just for you, I mean yes, it is, but for example, last year my mom was unexpectedly diagnosed with a brain tumor and stage IV cancer. She had emergency surgery and I ended up missing two solid weeks of work and then many, many days of work throughout last year to help her with follow-up care, chemo, radiation, etc., Thankfully I had savings in place to allow me to take the time to help my mom.

    Just something to consider, Erin.

    Caught up on this post.

OP I am sorry for your recent string of setbacks, that is certainly tough.

EW, I have hiked and camped the entire Napali Coast and will admit it was an amazing experience. I however have a separate vacation savings account that money is transferred into every month after bills, mortgage, kid's savings accounts, kid's college accounts, 401k, etc. Excursions should not come before emergency planning or savings.

@Jessie- I owe on my car. That's it. No credit card debt. No mortgage. No medical bills. I'd say I'm doing pretty good.

FH and I are not the only ones responsible for the kids. Both their mothers are remarried and have money. I love how all of a sudden all the financial responsibility for the kids belongs to me. I'm just here to take them cool places and love them. They are not my financial responsibility beyond buying them food, clothes and making sure they have a roof over their heads.

@MNA- how am I not in touch with reality? I work, pay my bills, take care of everyone around me and travel when I can. It's pointless to worry all the time. It does nothing but create stress. Nothing wrong with knowing that it will all be okay.

Also- carbon release from permafrost is a thing- http://www.livescience.com/37359-nasa-carve-thawing-permafrost-gas.html

    In case anyone is interested.

LeahH- I'm trying to find the one video I watched that sort of scared me straight on my money- I've been trying to be more mustachian in my ways- it's TRULY hard- for I am at heart -a magpie- I love shiny things- but the reality is- we are NOT safe- we are NOT secure. So yeah- it was scary as fuck- even if it's NOT all true- and it's only half true?

    still- scary ass shit.

Get your money together people- we aren't as cool as we think we are.

My great-great-grandparents once thought all was going to be okay.

    Then the Great Depression happened.

There is a stark difference between pure ignorance- worry and being prepared- we aren't worried as much because we are fucking prepared.

You're not worried because you've literally got your head stuck in the sand assuming nothing bad could ever happen. Which is- just- horrific.
