Empty wedding fund woes

So 2016 threw a wrench into our wedding plans big time this month! Our Ford Ranger (our ONLY means of transportation) unexpectedly died on us a couple weeks ago and put us in a very tight spot! My fiance recently bought out a friend's cleaning business and he works every single night without fail, so we were desperate for our truck to get fixed. We ended up needing a $650 motor, but were lucky enough to have mechanic friends who did the work for free. We go to get the truck and it starts, but won't move! Well turns out we now have a cracked transmission pump and something wrong with the alternator too. So we just shucked out another $1000 to the transmission shop and should have our baby back by Thursday! So here we are, back to zero on our wedding fund again! I am so worried our plans for this summer will all fall through due to this set back. FH won't even entertain talk about anything wedding related because he thinks we are screwed. (More in comments)

@Mrs. Sitzman- I DO!! Once he's my HUSBAND and I am his WIFE we will add each other to life insurance. I just don't want to do that until we are legally married.

Puddles- I'm impressed- most people can't manage to live off 3/4 of their paychecks- my goal is ultimately 1/2- or more- the rest to savings.

But I am- as I admitted- too much of a magpie.

Hubs is helping me- but I require active help. I get days where depression kicks in and I spend spend spend. It's so bad.

But the goal- the goal is saving minimum half.

Dumping ashes just anywhere is a great way to get it shut down. Can't tell you how many times Rides at Disneyland were closed for people "dumping ashes" so HazMat could come out. HazMat. Hazardous Materials EW. Not something you should just be dumping places.

@JoRocka - it is mostly because FH never spent a dime of his lump sum payout from his injury ($200k). We were also Homes for Our Troops recipients so our home is mortgage free. He gets a new vehicle every few years for next to nothing. However, he sacrificed a limb, bowl/bladder control and gained paralysis and a traumatic brain injury in exchange. The only debt we have is my car, student loans, and some of my medical debt. Otherwise we just have basic living expenses.

Haunted Mansion and it's a Small World are strangely popular for ash dumping. Half the pro gets closed when someone decides to do it.

The economy is good now, but in the near future?

No one can even predict it.

@Amanda- I don't have any credit card debt. When we go to Hawaii we pay cash. He finished paying off his debt to the IRS last month. Yes he still has debt from his bankruptcy. I told him he better talk to his ex and work something out. He shouldn't have to pay it all off himself.

@MNA- they went to bankruptcy court I guess and worked out a payment plan but then defaulted. I'm pretty sure they don't throw you in prison for owing Sears $5,000. Maybe if you are in serious debt they do. Not sure but he's not in prison so it's obviously a different situation. To say "Thank god the exes have the kids" is just rude. His sons mom is just as irresponsible. She too was part of the bankruptcy and isn't trying to fix it. FH daughters mom doesn't even work. Just lives off the government. We may not have savings but we work and pay our bills and taxes. We are good parents. We give them everything they need and then some. They don't judge our parenting on our savings account.

I'm not touching the cash bar because I think PPs have it covered, but I wanted to let you know that I bought my dress on sale for around $85 on ModCloth. Once your parents give you their budget, don't plan until you have the money in hand. I've seen some brides on here in a tough place because money they were counting on fell through. Good luck!

No I'm not worried. If we end up with both of the kids full time then we'll make it work. My company has great insurance benefits and if we need to get 2nd jobs we will. I don't know if FH ex has a savings account. All I know is that the debt never got paid off. Maybe it's all in FH name. Not really sure. I wouldn't say they are worse off. FH son is going to France again next summer and FH daughter is about to have a baby brother. I guess we are all just taking life as it comes. The debt isn't even that much. He just needs to pay it off.

All your responses are more exhausting than the previous one. Are you unable to see anything from anyone else's perspective? Are you capable of admitting maybe your naivety maybe a great downfall of yours? I am very concerned for your blissful reality.

I'm completely with Rachel on this. DH and I are 10 years younger than EW, have no kids and make a hell of a lot less, but we have savings and I have some money in an IRA. FFS, DH is starting his own business and mostly unemployed right now and I'm in school FT but it's ok because we have saved money that was put aside for this.

No I don't know details of his bankruptcy because he doesn't know. It was a long time ago and I've asked him questions. He just doesn't remember. All I've seen is the Sears bill that he was really shocked to get. It just showed up a few months ago. I think he thought it went away. Yeah... I told him it doesn't go away. He'll need to start paying on that. His sons mom has a full time job as does her wife. I wouldn't know about the savings situation. Not really our place to ask. FH daughters Mom basically depends on her husband. And is now having a baby. At least I can afford my monthly bills. That's why I said she is worse than us.

Yes I realize emergencies happen. I've lost my job before. I got another one. Had crazy expensive medical bills. I set up a payment plan and paid it off. I have never in my life had months worth of savings and I've never been homeless. I've lived on my own since I was 18.
