how many carats your ring is? Does it matter the relationship? I find myself a little put off by this but I know I tend to be funny-acting so I'm wondering if I'm in this thing alone. So I got my ring saturday night. But Sunday we were at dinner with some of his family. His one SIL IMMEDIATELY asked...

So I got my ring saturday night. But Sunday we were at dinner with some of his family. His one SIL IMMEDIATELY asked how many carats as well as one of his nieces. I mean for real? His niece preceded to analyze it and tell me how much she thought it was. Maybe it's okay b/c they're family? Hell I didn't even ask how many carats it is.

I think its very rude. I dont know how many carats mine is and I dont care. My husband designed it and picked each diamond individually and saved for ages and that means everything to me.

It is rude, although family is a little different. I wouldn't be so miffed at my sister/mom etc. Although I would say "you nosy biatch, what does that have to do with ANYTHING!" lol.

@ Sharon that's what I'm wondering if family gets a pass. Maybe I'm put off by it b/c it's not MY family? I dunno. I think it's just them. I've found some of them to be a bit abrasive on several occasions.

@ Aussie, I really have no idea either. I read a little bit on bluenile.com Based on the size of the diamonds and the fact that you can freaking see right through them, I know he spent a pretty penny. I don't think I really want to know how much he spent b/c it'd probably make me feel bad.

@Matt: Technically, you can get a conflict-free diamond for a lot cheaper if you get a lab-created one--which according to Wikipedia "can be chemically, physically and optically identical to naturally occurring ones, although they can be distinguished by spectroscopy in infrared, ultraviolet, or X-ray wavelengths." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_diamond#Gemstones)

I know some people prefer natural diamonds, but for anyone worried about the ethics but unable to purchase certified conflict-free natural gems, lab-created diamonds ARE "real"; they're just not as old.

Its rude, it is none of anybodies buisness how many carats your ring is. Why should it even matter to them. It didn't matter to you to ask so yes it is rude to ask. It shouldn't even matter to anyone including family.

I don't think its rude as long as they don't ask for the price. But then again me and my fiance are super open about these things and I don't mind telling people even the price if they ask me.

I do think that is rude...but i get "THATS YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING?...was he cheap or what?" my ring cost maybe $100, but i picked it out and i love it...and its a moonstone and not a diamond.

but gushing a little is always fun.

I think it depends on the person/context. The only person who has asked me is my BFF. I know it wasn't to judge me or FH, he loves us both. He was just excited for me & curious about it. & I have told a few other people because I was bragging about our jeweler & how they should use him (he gave FH a SUPER deal)!

I gave FH an idea of what I wanted, discussed with him that I felt color/cut/clarity combo was better than size to me; told him which jeweler I liked best, my fav shape, etc. I just wanted him educated on the topic.

Personally I think it was a bit rude how SIL and Cousin asked, and I might have been hurt, but then I feel bad for women like that-the ones who care more about the carat than the catch (FH that is) or the relationship the two of you have. Even if it is rude, don't dwell on it. Don't let them make you feel bad about it. You know that the ring is just a symbol for the love that the two of you share, & if they can't understand that, they're the ones losing out.

@Cassie that's awful. Some people just don't know when to shut up. The bridal consultant where I found my dress actually opened up her mouth and said to me "Well where's your ring? When is he gonna put a big rock on your finger?" My friend and I just looked at each other and shook our heads. I did not purchase my gown from there!

@Jessie, no I won't let them make me feel bad about my ring. I freakin love this thing! I guess they'll take a little getting used to. Like I said, my parents raised us not to ask people personal questions. And I personally hate being interrogated so maybe that plays a role too. Not too long ago, one of his nieces txt and asked was I pregnant b/c she had some silly dream. Ok #1 you can tell me about your dream without asking me if I'm preggo and #2, "are you pregant" to me translated to "are you sleeping with my uncle". Please stay in YOUR lane! Why would you ask that? If we are pregoo we'll let you know when WE'RE ready to let u know. ugh!

I dont know how many mine is...andy of the C's or the prices...i asked my FH to keep it that way so i couldnt answer the questions..my ring is pretty, perfect and makes me happy. I think those questions are very rude and people who ask them should learn what being engaged is really about.

I dont think its rude...but maybe thats because mine is 3 carats. Maybe Im just proud of my ring and could care less the size or amount of carats. Now price is another thing..I think thats our personal business how much it cost, but I get it all the time. People will say..aw..your ring is beautiful, if you dont mind how many carats is that, and I smile and say 3!! I guess its up to you.

If anything I would just find it irritating because that's all that so many people seem to care about and be focused on (not on this website but I mean just in general).

I find it incredibly rude and only ONE person has asked me! A friends boyfriend was trying to be funny and saking me how many carats (my ring is small, but I love it and its perfect for me. My FH bust his behind going to school fulltime and working to pay for it so it makes it even more special to me) my ring was and since she was fool enough to ask (I think she was trying to be funny too to be honest) I said no the question is how many carats is yours...oops I forgot you don't have one! LOL I KNOW it was petty but it felt so good!

    .

I Have a great man and don't try to measure how much he loves me or my worth by the number of carats...it don't work like that over here!

Dream I can totally feel you on that. Really no matter the size, If Im loving it I dont care if anyone knows the particulars. I said yes to the man not the ring, so I can totally understand. My thing is people are bound to ask about a ring as soon as they see it on your hand. Some may not ask the size, but for me it was always a part of the question. I'd get how pretty it was followed by ...how many carats.
