Do we need to have the champagne / wine toast?

Donnamarie, on November 9, 2011 at 11:38 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

Do we need to have the champagne / wine toast? Or can guests use their own drinks? I'm not trying to sound cheap, but we are on a tight budget and it's $5.50 a glass. I know whenever I've gone to weddings most people do not drink it, so do I have to offer it? Thoughts?

If you don't want to then don't. We did not but we did ask for him and I to have something provided and when the toast came around we were on the dance floor with our own drinks. My friend got married 2 weeks ago and paid $90 for champage glasses and after the toast the BM didn't make mention of anyone "toasting" so no one drank any champagne. Total waste of money.

I've been to weddings where everyone used their own drink, I've also seen weddings where only the bride and groom (or bride, groom and bridal party) have champagne for the toast.

It's your wedding people won't remember if there was champagne or not but they will remember having fun and sharing your day with you!

One more thing, most people already have their own drinks at this point. Not everyone likes the bubbly stuff so at $5 a head I'd skip it.

We aren't having champagne for our toast. Our bar is beer/wine/sangria only, so we'll be toasting w/ whatever drink our guests have at the time. My brother/SIL toasted w/ beer in champagne flutes! Smiley smile My FH will have beer, and I'll have wine - in the same champagne flutes my brother used!

We are not doing a champagne toast...I'm with you, on a budget, and it's ridiculous what they charge and my caterer told me that the BIGGEST waste at weddings is the toast...they pour OVER HALF of it away each wedding. Plus, we are having an open bar, so people will have all of their drinks anyway and if someone really likes the tradition, then they can just get champagne from the bar.

We are having the bride and groom glasses by the cake and we get one free bottle from the reception site, so we will still have our "pretty pictures" of the toast part, but without all the expense, hassle, and waste.

We'll probably do drink in-hand. Save the money for your honeymoon!

Yeah we only had champagne for us, and there was some at the bar but we didnt have it handed out. Guests just used whatever was in their hand for the toasts.

Your not cheap, if you were cheap you'd be in a court house getting hitched. Weddings are stupidly expensive. Save where you can love, remember your guest are your guest because they love you. They aren't there to judge. You can put toilet paper as centerpieces and they will still think it was amazing. Smiley smile

Donnamarie - Ginger ale is also a good alternative.

I haven't been to one wedding this year with a champagne toast. We just toasted with what we had. Some people did it with water/tea and others did it with wine/mix drinks.

We did, but only because it was part of our catering package and removing it was not going to save us any money.

I personally don't like champagne. However my venue offers free champagne for the toast. Guest will have the option of using the free champagne or whatever drink they have in hand. If your budget doesn't allow it and you don't want it then don't do it.

BP will have Moscato, which is a champaign wine pretty much, but the rest of the guests will use whatever their drinking. (our venue is also letting us bring in our own toast drink so its cheaper, you might want to ask your venue if thats a possibility but make sure you say JUST FOR THE TOAST)

I don't know if i am more amazed at champagne only being $5.50 a glass or that people dont drink at the weddings you go to! Smiley surprise) definitely some differences -- i was at a wedding this weekend, and they went through almost 150 bottles of champagne... separate from the open bar... i do not event want to think about the tab... yikes!!

okay -- now that that is over... i think it is fine to have people toast with the cocktail / glass of wine they already have.
