did you pick out your own engagement ring? (post pics)

emily, on August 21, 2010 at 2:52 PM Posted in Planning 0 60

I get asked this question all the time. "did you pick out your ring or did your fiance?" well, i picked out the setting and he picked out the diamond. the reactions i get are mixed. some people totally understand, cause its a beautiful ring. your ring is something you have to look at the rest of your life. you should love it and i do. others, well they are like, he should know what you want. he prob asked your friends, sisters, and mother for advice and these people know you best, right? but we all have different taste. what they like might not be what you like.

so here's the question, did you pick out your own engagement ring or were you suprised? would you have changed anything? and i would love to see the bling!

We went e-ring shopping a few times, and I knew exactly what I wanted. I showed him when we went shopping and told him that I wanted a princess-cut solitaire, so that is exactly what I got. Smiley smile I wouldn't change anything, I love the cut, and diamond, and just think it is a classic look.

We're making if official in a few weeks when he comes, he's from Venezuela. He's picking it out on his own..I gave him some pics of a variety of diff types I like, told him what I def didn't like.

@Sweetbella--Is that from Kay's? thats so funny, thats one of the pics I emailed him! :-)

He was like ohh i wasn't picturing anything like those, lol so hopefully my guidelines helped him; also we're on a tight budget, both being grad students, but I'm super excited for him to pick it out I think its more a reflection of him that way..buuut I'd still like a bit more input :-P I'll let you all know how it goes!

It wasn't planned that way but yes I did ... he wanted to know what types of rings i liked and when we went to a jewlers I found mine and fell in love with the setting and just had to have it. The diamond my mom offered to us since one did not come with the setting and we did not have the money for one upfront. Which only makes me love my ring all the more. We are letting everyone think he picked it out on his own cause it is easier then answering a million questions lol

Ultimately, yes. We went ring shopping a few times together. We narrowed it down to 3-ish rings that I liked and one that I loved. The one I loved was the more expensive of the 3 so I didn't expect him to get it for me, but it was amazing and I loved it so much. And, he spoils me Smiley smile Anyway, a few months later (I knew he bought a ring and it was on layaway) he accidentally spilled the beans about which ring it was--the one I loved. But, I had absolutely no idea when he was going to pop the question. And when he did ask me, I fell in love with my ring all over again. It was perfect and beautiful. What made it different is that he got to personally pick out the main diamond in the ring so I had no idea about that.

I'm glad that I got to pick out my own ring because this is the ring that I will wear for the rest of my life. It's gorgeous and timeless and absolutely me without being too much. He did a good job with the main diamond too Smiley smile

I picked out mine, because my FH wanted to spend as much as a used car on my ring, that scared me because my family has not had much luck with money, any way, the only thing I would change is that it is sterling silver and a pain to keep clean....as soon as I take a decent picture of it I will post it lol.

Yes,I was there to pick it out-I wanted something petite and what he thought was petite was still too fancy for me.

About a month after we met he asked me what style ring I'd like for when the time came. I had never wanted to get married so had never thought about it before. But I knew I was going to marry him so we went to try on rings so I could figure out what I'd like. I found the general style and details that I'd want and he made a mental note (and some written ones too lol) then a year and a half later he did go and pick out the diamond and ring himself but followed the style I had pointed out to him when we'd originally looked at rings. so I guess it was a combo. I think if you're wearing it for the rest of your life you'd better like it and if you're picky then go pick it out yourself and help the man out! lol This is a shot of my ring, wedding band and the 3ct bracelet he gave me the day of the wedding. And a shot of it on my hand on the wedding day

No pic yet..just got the actual ring yesterday Smiley smile

I picked mine out. Being that he has just brothers and has never had a reason to even look at jewelry, he felt clueless and wanted to make sure I got something I liked. So...I went to a few stores by myself, then brought him along and found one I fell in love with. Then we decided to have a custom jeweler make it (better quality for same price).....which was great, but took FOREVER. its gorgeous though and I love it. He did pick out the main diamond.

Ive gotten mixed reactions when people hear the I picked it out. my mom thought it was terrible that I had seen the ring before he had proposed and a few others seem to look down on it. But, its what worked for us and I found that looking in person at actual rings, my taste was different than if he had just done off of pics I had sent him or that he had gotten from someone close to me Smiley smile

We shopped together. I finally found a setting and a diamond I was nuts about. He was more comfortable getting it since the diamond wasn't mounted yet, so I wouldn't see the finished product. We drove a block, turned around, and bought it. He didn't hide it very well, so I saw it after he brought it home. But the proposal was a total surprise for me, and I hadn't seen the ring in months, so it worked out perfect!

For me, not knowing when the proposal was coming was what I preferred. I'd rather have a ring that I know I'll love.

I totally love this ring! My fiancee took me to several stores looking for the style that I liked. Heck, he even took me to one the day we got engaged. He never once really looked at the ring instead he just watched me. He told me my face said everything. Actually he put a down payment on my ring when I went to the bathroom and then when we left he said he was sorry he wouldn't get that particular ring it was too expensive! He then took me to seven other stores to throw me off and boy did it work! I was so excited when it was this! particular ring!!!!

Corinne & Kristy those are gorgeous settings!!! We shopped for mine together because frankly we were both clueless. I never wear jewelry. I didn't want him to spend a lot but he insisted on getting me something fancy so I did, from Robbin's Brothers, and I LOVE it! I would have loved it just as much even if it weren't so fancy or cost as much as it did and he picked it out just because it was from HIM. I never saw myself as having so much "bling" but I love it. :-) Here is a pic with the wedding band I just recently got from Zales.
