A wedding without a theme.. ?

The New Mrs. B, on August 21, 2012 at 7:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 28

Hello!

So I am wondering if there's anyone else out there without an actual "theme" for their wedding.. If so, has it been more helpful or hurtful during your planning?!

We have made a lot of decisions already (colors, venue, flowers, etc) and I FEEL like things are coming together nicely.. I'm just wondering how people feel about having a theme.. Does a wedding without a theme lack something special?

My FH and I both have pretty simple taste.. I want something very classic and nothing too showy.. I don't want to regret anything from our wedding, so I'm trying to keep things "timeless" and beautiful! Smiley smile

Also, we're getting married at a castle in northern Michigan, which I feel like takes care of a lot of the "decor" stuff for us (it's a beautiful stone building).. and I'm trying REALLY hard to avoid a "princessy" feel for our wedding.. I'm just not a princess type of bride :-P

I don't know if any of this makes sense.. but I'm just looking for general feedback..

Thanks! Smiley smile

I don't think you need a theme at all. Sometimes they can be over done. If decor is a priority, sll you need is a plan for your decor. You are being married in a castle and you want things "timeless" and "beautiful". It sounds perfect to me.

While I think it is important to have a cohesive overall style, I don't think a theme is necessary. The only reason people think themes are necessary these days is because of wedding shows on tv such as David Tutera's My Fair Wedding and Four Weddings.

    Don't sweat it.

We are very simple as well and we don not have a theme. I have always thought a wedding was its own theme. I think you should do whatever makes you both happy on your special day.

I don't have a theme. My wedding is in Oct. so my MOH says it's a Fall theme, but I say I'm themeless. All I knew is that I wanted an elegant wedding.

    Ahhh! Thanks so much ladies!

Carole.. I suppose you're right.. if I had to give my a name to my "theme" it would be timeless and beautiful! Why didn't I think of that.. And I think I've been avoiding a "theme" because I agree.. then can be very overdone (of course, not always!), which I'm trying to avoid!

Mrs. O.. that's exactly what I had been thinking all along.. as long as things were cohesive, I wouldn't need a theme..

Thanks so much ladies! I knew you had my back! Smiley smile I just needed some reassurance I guess..

I'm not using a theme as well. I believe it made the process less stressful.

I just went with my colors... I'm not a huge fan of themes. Sometimes they are over done or start to look like a sweet sixteen almost, plus it takes away from the bride and groom.

I don't have a theme at all. My colors are based on two of my favorite flowers - orchids (pink) and hydrangeas (white). Our venue is our home as we have a beautiful 4 acre pond in the back and a large lawn - so wanted to keep my colors simple so as not to compete with the surroundings. Sounds like you are doing the same since you have a gorgeous castle for your venue. I think it will be lovely without a theme!

Thanks Linda! That's sort of how I chose my colors too.. I loved green hydrangeas! So that's the green we're going with!

Maraia.. I think it's been less stressful for me so far too!

Pearl.. I get what you mean.. I don't have to worry about doing anything too "trendy" either that's going to seem silly looking back on pictures Smiley smile

We aren't doing a theme....our wedding will at a beautiful park. Our friends and family know that i love dragonflies, so there will be a few of those here and there, but more as a personal touch than a theme.

@Lori C...yes , it is at Castle Farms (know this from previous post) :-) Nice to see another MI bride...I am in the grand rapids area.

No theme here! I guess looking at it you would say it's an autumn-ish theme. But we are going outside of the fall-theme here and there as our tastes desire. I agree about themes becoming more popular with all the wedding shows. I never even heard of a theme until I watched a few.

The theme is "wedding" lol! =)

I don't remember who said it, but another WW bride said her theme was "sh*t we like"... So that's what I'm going for... Before my theme was getting married sh+t we like just sounds better :p
