History

Sharon Mill’s historic sawmill was first built in the 1830s, on what was originally Native American hunting grounds. The stunning mill was regularly refurbished and updated with small additions throughout the 19th and early 20th century, until Henry Ford purchased the mill in 1928 as part of his Ford Village Industries concept. Ford constructed a stone addition to the sawmill and transformed the building into a small factory, employing a small team of 15 men to manufacture cigar lighters until the plant eventually closed in 1946.

The mill was briefly repurposed once again in the 1950s as an antique business, and then served as a private residence for 30 years. Its most recent commercial use was in 1990 when Michigan wines used it to bottle and sell their products. In 1999, the mill and its 24-acre site was sold to Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation. The interior of the mill currently contains photos of the building’s former uses, and accompanying artefacts encased in glass.
