The house was built in the 1830s as a stagecoach stop. Over the next 100 years, the building went through many transformations and at the turn of the 20th century, it operated as a TB sanatorium for several years. In 1940 the property was purchased by Mary Aleshire and Daisey Erb who restored and the historic property and opened it as the Oak Knoll Art Studio in 1942. The property served as a summer artist's retreat and received many famous guests. In 1965 the house was sold to the caretaker Jim Reid. It was purchased again in 1989 by its current owners, who restored it once again and transformed it into the Black Mountain Inn.
