I like a photographer, but she is 1 and 1/2 hours away. Some people say that I should get one closer.

I would get one that is closer simply because of the cost/mileage factor. That should save you a little bit and every bit counts in my book.

I would go with a photographer that makes you comfortable. If the photographer is willing to travel, I don't see a problem. I travel over an hour to weddings all the time. Sometimes it's hard to find the right fit in your back yard.

I regularly travel 2 hours for events. I don't see any issues. I'm also just getting signed on with a travel agent friend to be their destination wedding photographer. That will be several thousand miles per job.

Mine will be traveling at least an hour (in DC traffic that's not hard to do). I don't see an issue with it.

You should ask what their travel policy is. Personally, I write off my mileage on my taxes instead of charging my couples and if I can drive home the same night, I don't charge anything extra! The important thing is that you get the photography that you want :)

I agree with Amanda. See what their travel policy is. My front-runner for photog only charges extra is its more than 45 min away, outside MD, VA, WV area. If the price is right, they are willing to travel, and you really like them then just ignore anyone who tells you different.

Some people prefer to hire local business to support their local economy which is totally fine, but really I think supporting any small business is just as great. Most wedding photographers today are private or small businesses. If they are willing to travel and you really love their work, then go for it! No regrets for your wedding! And honestly, I can't imagine the travel fees for 1 1/2 hours would be too outrageous, but I can't speak for them. :)

If you can negotiate a decent travel fee and you're comfortable with what it will cost, I can't see why not you shouldn't use her, if you feel comfortable with him/her and like their work. Go for it! Our first photographer was about 2 hours away, and then she cancelled but our new photographer is 1 1/2 hours away.

Shoot... half my clients are within 2 hours. If I have a shoot in Orange county that's like 2 hours away depending on the traffic...

don't worry about the distance.

I agree. Hire who you like. It is your pictures, and they are so personal. An additional travel fee may be $100 max, and it is well worth the fee to have a photographer you love!

I agree with everyone. The distance is not too bad. We've traveled several hours to do a wedding. Just check their mileage policy so you're aware of any extra charges. Bottom line, if you like the photographer, they'll be worth the distance. Good luck!

Sometimes the perfect fit isn't in your back yard. Heck - I travelled 4500 miles to come over here for my soul mate! Distance is no object for the RIGHT vendor, but just ask what their policy is so you know going in.

I'm based in Virginia and just a few weeks ago, I was shooting a wedding in the middle of nowhere in Indiana. I think anywhere within 2 hours is very reasonable. Go with the photographer you're comfortable with.

Absolutely, go with the photographer you like. Nearly any wedding vendor -- photographer, DJ, band, caterer, videographer, etc -- will travel 90 minutes to a wedding, no problem!

Only thing for you to consider, I suppose, is how often do you plan to meet your photographer in person in advance, and where would you meet? The photographer might want you to come to her studio or somewhere in her neck of the woods for such meetings. (Although perhaps you could meet at a mutually convenient halfway point.)

Also, before signing with this photographer, make sure she does not have any negative attitude about the travel. She shouldn't ... but there a FEW vendors who will be a bit pickier about travel when a wedding is a hugely popular date as yours is (a Saturday in early October). Just discuss it upfront. But like I (and other vendors who responded here) say, it really ought not be an issue ... we wedding vendors are used to traveling various distances to wedding sites!

I agree that if you love your photographer, don't listen to anyone else! You will be the one looking at those photographs forever! Go with the one you like!
