Is it really that SERIOUS???? Do I need to do STD cards???
Yeah.... so Ummm, not really feeling the whole STD thing, mainly because of the face that all of our family that is getting invited only lives at the most 3 hours away, with the exception of a few and they are either helping with the wedding or in it so they already know what day it is, so I don't feel like I should waste my time/money getting them, cause it's not like they live in Europe or something, but that's just me... do you agree or disagree???

I would recommend searching the boards for this question because there are a lot of previous posts about it and interesting answers out there....

But no.. Save The Dates are in no way, shape, or form mandatory. I'm not doing them--everyone that needs to know already knows about our wedding. If I could get out of spending the money on invites I would, but obviously that's not really an option unless I want my guests to think I'm cheap by inviting them online.

I just posted a question about STD's as well. I personally am not using them after hearing the advice from everyone on my post.

I was wondering this myself. I don't think these were used long ago (when my mom and dad got married). I don't think I will use them either after reading these posts. I think for the most part, it is just another way for companies to make money.

We are only sending STD to my FH family that lives in the Netherlands, and Germany.. I also have just a few friends that are staioned overseas so they are getting one.. But if they live in the states we arent wasting money sending them STD since we are planning on sending the invitations out Feb time

I think they are only important for folks who are traveling a long distance and/or will need to plan ahead to save $ for travel expenses (all my family is out of town... and several on welfare)... or for folks who will need a LOT of notice to arrange work schedules. Otherwise, they're not really that important.

And everyone else beat me to the STD thing ;) Sounds like we're talking diseases!

I think it depends on the size of your wedding/who you're inviting. If it's just family and some close friends, then they probably already know about your wedding. But if your having a lot acquaintances from work, friends of your parents, etc, then you might need to send the save the dates because they might not already know about the wedding plans. Then again, if you're only inviting those people out of obligation or your parents insistence, then maybe by not sending save the dates they will have already made other plans and won't come anyway! :)

I would send STD's to the guests who live over 1 or 2 hours away. That is what all the etiquette sites say is proper. They may want to arrange lodging and take time off work as that is a little much to drive both ways in one day...especially if you're having open bar.
But there is no need to send them to in-town guests at all.
If you only have several STD's to send you can do them yourselfwith card stock and online templates. If you google for them you can even find some that are free. $10 bucks will get you 50 envelopes and card-stock at staples, then add on postage.
