There are so many traditions surrounding weddings, imposed by both ourselves and society. Brides in particular are bombarded with ideas of what you should do - as if there’s a universal rule that works for everybody. One of the oldest misconceptions in the book is that you have to wear a dress to your wedding.

Psst...you don’t.

It’s your wedding, it’s the 21st century, and you can do whatever you want. So if you’re even slightly hesitant about wearing a dress, read on.

Here’s why you should at least consider wearing pants.

Pants can be more comfortable.

Dresses are sometimes more comfortable than pants, for sure. Especially if we’re comparing airy sundresses to jeans. But when we’re talking wedding dresses, we’re usually talking about a lot of fabric. It takes a long time to get in and out of them. Certainly, you can find comfortable wedding dresses. We’re not disputing that. But generally speaking, pants on your wedding day will provide you with more freedom. You won’t have to worry about your train when going to the bathroom, tripping over the fabric while dancing, or changing into a more flexible outfit for the dance-heavy reception. Overall, you won’t have to think about it as much.

They make a statement.

Your outfit will be remembered simply because you dared to wear pants. Is that fair? No. But it’s true. Most brides wear dresses, and your guests will expect you to wear a dress. The very act of wearing pants is going to make you a bride to remember. And who doesn’t want to be a bride who’s remembered?

There are beautiful options.

A bride wearing pants to her wedding is becoming increasingly commonplace. So you will be able to find a beautiful option, perfect for what you’re looking for. Definitely don’t let the fear of not being able to find decent options deter you from trying.

They’re cheaper.

A wedding dress is the most expensive piece of clothing you will likely ever buy. It’s as simple as that. The average cost of a wedding dress is about $1,600, though this does vary by region (for example, brides in New York paid more than the average). Pants are going to cost less than dresses (generally speaking) for a couple of reasons. First, they use less fabric than wedding dresses do. Secondly, you will likely be able to find pant ensembles at a variety of retailers, not just bridal salons. But if you are willing to be a little creative in what your dream look is in the first place, you can snag some really solid prices.

They’re more uniquely you.

If you’re reading this post, you are probably already considering wearing pants and maybe seeking permission? Listen, if you feel more comfortable in pants, you’ll look better in pants. And you want to look your best on your wedding day. After all, it’s not the dress that makes the bride; it’s the bride that makes the dress...erm, pants.
