...You want how much for a small cake??!!

Anonymous, on March 6, 2012 at 7:57 PM Posted in Planning 0 32

All I need is a small 2 tiered wedding cake, white cake, buttercream frosting, no complicated decorations, to feed 40 to 50 people. The reception is near the Los Angeles area. I get prices from $140 on up plus $30 deliver, plus tax. This is a destination wedding, & no one invited lives in the area, so I can't have one baked at a home. Any ideas??

Try a grocery store. We get our sons birthday cakes from walmart and they are yummy. A friend of mine is on a super tight budget and is getting hers from walmart and it's actually a cute design they are even adding a cake topper that says "Mr. & Mrs." for like $10.

Check out your local grocery store. I live in FL and the bakeries around here were giving me quotes starting at $6 a slice (WOW MUST BE GOOD CAKE LOL), thats not including delivery (another $100 because of the distance/ritzy town my venue is in). My local grocery store has cake for $3 a slice, and its freaking good cake!

They beat me to it but I was going to say the same thing. We have a "fancy Fry's/Kroger" here and the cakes in their bakery look like a million bucks!

140 is actually not bad for a wedding cake, we're paying 530 for ours to feed 125

Also if you're gonna go to Wal*Mart or something...Publix, etc... dont tell them its a wedding cake. Just say its a anniversary cake, i swear when you say the word WEDDING, the price gets hiked. then put your own cake topper on it

My cake is a 2 tiered (feeds about 50) marble cake with buttercream frosting and it has a fondant ribbon wrapped around it. She is delivering it special to the venue, she normally doesn't deliver that far, on a Sunday morning and she is charging $85.

I agree...sounds reasonable for a private bakery....we are paying $425 for a 3 tier that feeds 100..... Bit she was the cheapest we found...I was quoted around $6 a slice at most other places.....def. check out the local grocery stores for cheaper prices Smiley smile

That isn't a bad price at all. It may sound high but you will be getting a fresh custom made cake compared to the grocery store, which are frozen Smiley smile

I agree, I live in Los Angeles and I think that pricing is very reasonable. Then again, I just ordered a 9 in. birthday cake for FH and it was $46 (I will go pick it up).

    Costco sheetcakes are DELICIOUS!

In nyc/nj cakes run 7-20. per serving. And yes, a wedding cake is different from a birthday cake. It's more intricate, it's gotta be perfect, and it's usually the only dessert. If a grocery store cake is going to do it for you, then that's what you should do; we all have different priorities. And yes, most grocery store cakes are frozen or par baked.

Our cake is $1,139 for 80 people. Smiley smile But we also have a custom cake and by the best bakery in our area Smiley smile

    $140.00 isn't bad for 40-50 people. That's only $3 - $3.50 per slice.

Bakers are going to charge a minimum of $2.00 (normally closer to $2.50-$3.00) for each serving, so a cake for 40-50 would cost a minimum of $80-$100 and an average closer to $100-$150. I would suggest you negotiate and tell them your limit is $2.50 per serving for 50 guests which would be $125.00. Delivery is important because they are 100% liable for anything that happens to the cake, so I'm not surprised they charge $30.00, think atleast 2 employees drinving (cost of gas) plus set up, which can probably be pretty time consuming and stressful. If you can't afford that, go with something from a local grocer and have a family member pick it up and set it up for you. You may be able to get away with closer to $75-100 for that.
