WR: Ladies who have had a weekday or destination wedding. . .

KenWay, on February 23, 2011 at 11:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

I am just wondering because a lot of the other ladies on here can't feel my pain because they get married locally and on Saturdays (the norm). I want to hear from some women who have done the "none traditional" thing. I am getting married Thursday July 28th in Austin though FH and I reside in Dallas and my family is from Arkansas lol. I have 170 people on my guest list and I don't want more than 100 people at my wedding. (75 is even better) What are the odds in your experience that 50% or less will show? I want to know some of your turn outs...I have ALL out of town guest since no one lives in Austin and I have a crazy day of the week in play (that I did on purpose since I want a small wedding and its more affordable with my vendors too). I want to hear from you ladies. . . Speak up Smiley smile

I didnt go through any of the crazy planning!! I got married in Jamaica in the middle of winter... January.

We told every one where we were going and if you can pay your own way this is where we will be. No one came along and we were happy about that. Its called the "wedding moon". Minimal planning involved and when we got home he had one major kick ass party.

Well, I didn't have mine yet but I'm also not traditional. We will be married on a Friday, Good Friday in fact, in the Caribbean. We invited about 45 in total but we really only wanted 10-12 people! Gotta love parents forcing things . . .yes well. Ultimately, at this point we have 11 for sure and 3 who are still "maybe". You know your invitees the best, just go down the list person by person, consider their financial situation, personal travel preferences, etc and guesstimate who you think will make the trip. We were terrified to invite so many cause we knew we couldn't afford it but once I really looked at who our parents were putting on the list, I knew it wouldn't be a big deal as most wouldn't be able to afford the travel. The good thing about DW's is that no one will show up unexpectedly!

We got married in NH. We live in VA. DS' family is all in VA and mine is are in MA (about 2-3 hours from where we got hitched) I think in the end we ended up inviting 180-190 people. I think we ended up with about 100, so a little more than 50% showed. I think having a weekday wedding will lessen the number too.

@jaemi, OMG see your numbers are my ideal numbers. I'm crossing my fingers for 75-100. I mean you would think since it's a Thursday night people would be more inclined to DECLINE! lmao... My world will be a perfect place if 50% of my invite list showed. It's not too little and not too many. I wish I could chop the invite lost down more but it's already bare bones Smiley sad we have large immediate families.

@ cyndi, girl no one is going to drive 3 hours from Dallas or 6 hours from Arkansas before RSVPing...you are right sbout the destination bit, at least I hope not! Lol we originally wanted a small Mexico beach wedding but got talked into this one lol. So we are still making it difficult by putting it on a Thursday night and it's hours away from home ol. Genius if it actually works out.

@KenWay yeah I think the numbers will be less because it is a weekday. That is not a holiday or anything is it? Is more thatn 50% in your budget? My worry would getting more yes, than no and then not being able to afford it. If you can and it is more just a numbers game as in you want less for the more intimate feeling then go for it! Here is a question and please hold back the laughter if you must, is Austin a good "vacation" spot? I ask because I wonder if people would be tempted to use that week as their summer vacation, check out Austin and watch you get married. Just a though, not to freak you out or anything. :-)

I am planning a "destination" wedding in CA. Out of 108 invited, about 60, including us, RSVP'd. Most people are the locals to CA.

We're doing both! A destination wedding on a Thursday. Of course the day of the week doesn't really matter since we're all doing at an all-inclusive and everyone will be there for at least 7 days. Of the 101 people invited, only 24 are coming (including us) and 17 are immediate family. So yeah, we only had a 25% return.

I didn't personally have a weeknight wedding~ BUT the venue I worked at had a few every year. They were actually really successful! I had one bride who booked with us In October and needed to get married in December before her F was sent off to boot camp. The only date we had available was the Wednesday before New Years. They invited 125, expecting 100 because of the short notice and day but ended up at 200! It was so great and such an amazing wedding (I hope they're doing well). That was the best success story, but we've had quite a few really successful weekday weddings. Bottom line is, your loved ones will go out of their way to celebrate with you, so just do what is best for you.

I had a wedding on a Friday night in January. I invited 30 and only 20 have showed. The guests that didn't show up didn't want to travel in winter time. I am pretty sure that you will have much less guests Smiley smile

I intentionally planned a destination weekday (colorado on a monday) wedding for the purpose of not having people show up. It may sound rude, but I just really like the idea of a more intimate wedding, and this allows us to have the wedding we want without hurting feelings. We're not even sending invitations to anyone except the people we already know will be there, and then all of the "extra" people will receive invitations to our wedding celebration that we're having when we get back!

We live in Georgia, the wedding is in my hometown in California. Most of the guests are out of town and the wedding is gonna be tuesday june 21st. The guest list is up to 250 but the venue only holds 150 (including dj, cateers, etc.) and is limited to 21 tables. with the date on an off day it cuts a lot of the wedding costs (venue and cateers were cheaper) also we had to cut the list, but it is gonna work. Invites go out in april.

I'm getting married on a Friday night. I'm expecting 130 and most of my guests will probably show up. My reason for having a Friday night wedding was so that we could spend a little time with our OOT guests on Saturday at brunch, since we are leaving on Sunday.

We sent STD's and kind of knew who would come. We zeroed in when we sent the invites with the RSVP cards. We had one couple who cancelled last minute and another couple who got a flight and joined us last minute. You never know for sure. However with DW's you have a really good idea how many will be there ahead of time.

As for not on a weekend, with DW it does not really matter. They will be taking Vacation time and using it to be there for you. So relax and enjoy it.

We had a Tuesday wedding in Massachusetts. (We live in the DC area.) Pretty much everyone we invited came--but then again, we invited only immediate family and a few close friends. How many of your invitees will come depends a lot on the individual situations of the people you are inviting.

@jaemi, lol I can afford comfortably about 110-120 in my budget I have set forth but anything over like 125 will be pushing it big time. But I did budget for at least 120. Austin is awesome, great lakes, hill country, live music everywhere, historic 6th street I mean we have lots of guests saying they are making it their summer vacation. That's what has me a little worried... Lol but I will suck it up either way I suppose.

@Amy, I dont want them to take time off lol. I want a 50% no rate lolSmiley smile

@mrs. Crumpet , I wish!!!! Lucky! Smiley smile

We are doing an in town wedding, out in the park, on a Thursday in the afternoon. We invited 60 people (family & very close friends). I am wearing a flowing brides-maid dress as my wedding dress. So its okay to be very non-tradtional wedding.
