Wine tasting at reception-Ideas please!

HRH Mags, on August 14, 2011 at 3:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

I personally love trying different kinds of wines and many of our friends enjoy wine tasting too. So during the reception we are thinking of having a wine tasting area set up. We are able to supply our own wine. The caterer we are probably going with has a bar tender we can hire as well to serve the adult beverages. We were thinking of having it set up for after dinner along with some different cheeses and spreads. There is a german deli nearby that has amazing cheese and wine pairing, I thought we could have an around the world kind of theme for the tasting. We thought about doing it for the cocktail hour as well but thought it might be something fun to add in for later in the night to keep the party going.

What do you guys think of this idea? Has anyone done something similar? How did you offer it? Maybe set it all up on a table near bartender so they can keep an eye on everything? We haven't gotten to the point of hiring a caterer so have not discussed this with her yet.

TIA

That sounds like so much fun! I would do it during coctail hour since during the reception most people are out on the dance floor. Also... make sure that the table is long enough - I can see the wine tasting bar getting busy!

LOVE this idea! A wedding we went to last summer was at a winery and after the ceremony they had hor 'derves and wine to sample. It was great, the only down side was I think out of all the types of wine the winery made, only 2 or 3 were offered, so defintely have at least 3 to sample. LOL

I was thinking of having more like 5-8 samples of wine and maybe 3-4 different cheeses.

would do it during cocktail hour. After dinner, many people will not actually be able to truly taste the wines.

You definitely want to have someone, at the wine tasting table, pouring the wine. I would serve no more that 1 1/2 to 2 ounces per person. If you allow people to pour their own, they will tend to pour full glasses (of course, if your state is like Oregon, you MUST have a licensed server pour the wine.)

Make sure that the cheeses are not strong and highly flavored. You will also want to have either chunks of plain french bread or some plain water crackers as palate cleansers.

It does sound like a fun twist at a reception.

We were thinking of doing something like that with all the local wines.

Good advice Kathy thank you. Excellent point about doing it before dinner too so people can taste everything better too!

Are there any non alcoholic drinks that go well with cheese? I'll have other drinks available of course since they wont be gulping down the wine (hopefully anyways!) as we intend to set it up like all the other tastings I have been to with the small cups like Kathy mentioned. But is there some kind of cider or something that might go well to add an option to taste outside of wine?
