When do you open gifts?

Gabriele , on April 7, 2013 at 5:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

So here is my question ... we have received 2 wedding gifts already. One from FMIL back in February, who took advantage of a great sale.

And one recently from a friend of FH's who can't attend the wedding.

I am a little unclear ... do I open them right away and send a Thank you card? Do I wait until the shower? Do I wait until the wedding?

We already opened FMIL's ... but some general thought from all of you would be appreciated. My shower won't be until the weekend before the wedding and the wedding is June 29th.

We have been opening and immediately sending a card. The more we can get done now the better!

Mrs. P - I am liking that answer! LOL

How may gifts have you received already? It seems so early, but then makes me realize how close the wedding is.

Most people open them immediately, others wait until after the wedding. It's totally up to you.

A friend received gifts several gifts months before the wedding. She forwarded a note to the guests to let them know it was received and that they opted to wait to open the gifts after the wedding.

I agree. You'll be overwhelmed with thank you cards soon enough.

We didn't open all of our gifts until after we came back from the honeymoon.. I guess the hardest part is sending Thank you cards now.. smh.. Should have done it earlier.

We have only received a few. Mostly they are gifts from OOT guests that cannot come. I think that ForeverMyLove makes a good point if you choose not to open them immediately and that is to let the guest know you received it, but are waiting to open it. If I were to send a gift to someone and didn't hear anything after a few weeks, I'd begin to worry that it either wasn't received or that the recipient has a complete lack of manners and was not sending a thank you card.

Gifts should be opened when they are received and a thank you card written right away.

I've already received a few gifts (super early!)! My wedding is in 6 months, and my shower isn't until July! So I opened them right away and immediately wrote the notes. If I waited till my shower or after, I know the givers would have a fit. Lol.

Open gifts right away....unless it is a shower present and you've been instructed to wait...otherwise, the person will be wondering if the gift arrived.

We haven't had our shower yet...June 1st wedding so I'm thinking it will be soon; we received our first shipped gift last week and we opened it. I sent the Thank You card the next day.

I think if they sent it you should open it and send your thank you note, that way they know you received it and you got your first few notes out of the way.

    Good luck!!!

We're sending pictures with the thank you cards so I've just been contacting those I know and FH those he knows to say an informal thanks and that the formal one will be on the way.
