What Things are OFF-LIMITS on a Registry?

I thought this might be a fun topic: In your opinion, what things are completely off-limits for a wedding registry? If you were invited to a wedding and saw _blank_ on their registry, what would upset/anger/annoy/freak you out the most?

On a side note, one wedding we're invited to, the 'couple' (bride) registered for:

    2x Humidfiers (who needs two?)

    .

12x 5 piece settings (dinner plate, salad plate, what not) I'm all for giving house stuff but 1) They've lived together for a long time, 2) who needs 12 place settings? it's ust the two of them! plue they're like somewhere between $50-70 a setting, I think the cutlery they wanted per place setting was even more..

    .

A purse hanger...?? I thought it was cool, but not something you register for as a gift for the couple..???

    .

    A french fry cutter??

    .

They bascially have 2 full pages of stuff to re-furnish their house, bedding sets (about 2) not sure how many towel sets, I just htought it was crazy, I thnk she got a tad excited and registered for stuff she thought was cool but might not/most likely not use..

I guess nothing really bothers me, the expensive items maybe a few family members would chip in. Let's face it you know how much you want to spend on someone so your going to choose a gift that fits into your budget and if there aren't any on there then give them a gift card. I know for my friend's baby shower she had registered for a crib and changing table and a couple other expensive things so people gave her gift cards and with all the gift cards she bought the big stuff.

@Tracey- it's the hard core one that spins and the stuff is always frozen and ready to go! Like a slurpee machine, but with booze! I know it's a little extreme, but we have people over a lot, and it'd be worth it! In the meantime, we registered for a cheaper one!

We actually did register for games (board games) and got some! But they'll like $20, we don't have any, and around here that's how you entertain, especially when family comes in from out of town. But a Wii? Uh, no.

This post made me go chek my registry! I am registered for a lot of expensive ($70 & up) things @ Macy's and then my lower priced things are at Target and Amazon. I think I want to put a lot more lower priced stuff at Macy's so I don't offend anyone...

Why doesn't WW offer a wedding registery checklist??!

@wowjunkie: I actually registered for THREE sets of Scattergories. Most people who look at our list will think we're nuts, but his family and mine are HUGE Scattergories fans and we have these huge tournaments on the 4th of July, but there are never enough boards for everyone! haha So I know at least his family and mine will get it and hopefully we'll have enough next 4th of July!

@wow - I really want to register for the board games that come in the nice boxes and kind of look like old books. Since they came out with those I have wanted to the full set b/c I love games and they look nice. You may have given me the courage to do it haha

@FMS In the defense of registering for house hold things. FH and I have lived together for 3 years and we have all the house hold things we need but they are hand me downs or from other relationships. So we registered for all the house stuff I dont see anything wrong with that.

I'm not sure that anything would really freak me out. I mean just like everyone else said, you go on the registry and you either buy something you can afford or you just give $.

We will have lived together for over a year, but all of our stuff is CHEAPO stuff that we got just to get us started. Half of our glasses already broke lol So basically we will register for upgrades!

I think you shouldn't register for any kinds of contraception. LOL. Even if you think its funny. I know I'm going to get some heat for this from some brides, but in MY opinion, you shouldn't registry for a honeymoon. I had a friend registry for $1200 spa day(I'm not joking).

As for the expense of items, I think it depends on you and your family. I have plenty of high end items as well as low end items. I even had a phone call from a relative asking why I removed my 10 piece All Clad pots and pans set, and if I could put it back on so she could purchase it. ( I removed it because I thought it was too much money $600). That being said my family perfers to buy fine china instead of giving money or daily use items. My cousin didn't registry for china and there was definitly some grumbiness directed towards that choice. SO the point being, china(consider expensive) is a good choice for me, where it might not be a good choice for another bride.

I don't understand why anyone would be offended by expensive things on people's registry..if you think it's too expensive, don't buy it. The point of a registry is so that the couple can let their guests know what they want. The guests don't have to understand why they want it or what they are going to do with it. I totally see putting expensive things on your registry. Often times, people choose to go in on gifts with other couples. For example, we recently went in with 4 other couples and purchased the patio set the bride and groom had registered for. Coming from our own experience, I would rather have a group of friends go in on something that we really want rather than trying to find something in their price range that we didn't register for. We also registered for some pricier items because we get a discount on any of our items left on our registry for the next year. If no one else cares to purchase these gifts, we are fine with that, but if we can get it cheaper, why not?

I think that when people place cars on their registries, it's more like a joke. And don't forget that some stores offer discounts for registry completion so people might have higher priced items on there to take advantage of that! Smiley smile

I agree with most of the responses. Personally, sex toys and lingerie seem inappropriate on a general registry (viewed by all your guests, not just your bridal shower attendees). One of the craziest items I saw was on my cousin's registry - she had a baby college fund. I understand she wants to get started with that as soon as possible but she didn't even have kids yet! lol

All I know for sure is that I want my gift list at myregistry.com to be polite yet creative without being too greedy. And let's be honest, cash gift funds are the new norm so I don't even consider those tacky. Many couples have everything they need and could do with a fun honeymoon Smiley smile

I went to the ladies room while at BBB and I had no idea what Fh did while I was in there until I checked our registry online- he registered for 5 bags of Reece's Pieces! *rolls eyes* I'm thinking about going and getting them and giving them to him as part of his gift from me.

I tried to keep everything on our registry on or around $20, although about 3 items were $30 or more, but none over $60. FH wanted to register for a $400 tv...I think that is off limits. Personally, I think we should keep the items on out registry priced reasonably. No one in either one of our families could afford that, so theirs no reason on scanning it. Plus, I'd feel horrible if someone did buy it for us. I think the items we scanned were very reasonably priced & I don't think anyone will think we're being outrageous by asking for anything.

Food. Its weird to register for food items. I just went on a registry at Williams Sonoma yesterday for a wedding I am going to this summer and they had about 15 different ingredients, sauces and rubs. I just think that is weird. Spice rack is one thing but a jar of BBQ is strangeSmiley smile

I did register for 12 place settings for my "fine china" which I plan to use everyday. But we have a family of 5 so by the time we get done with a meal half the plates are dirty. I got tons of small kitchen things on my BBB registry. One cause I need to replace 90 percent of what I have and two they are most under $20 so I was like well we need it to entertain. On our Target registry we have fun items either for having fun or documenting it. A video camera, PS3 and games, new bikes, camping gear like a tent big enough for the family. This is the registry I really am not giving out. I also got a few things at Kohls but probally will not give it out at all due to the other two having more items.

I don't mind having higher end items on a registry, everyone needs things to get started and if you are having a large wedding, people might go in for things together, especially if you are younger and starting out.

That said, the STRANGEST thing I have ever seen on a wedding registry is UNDERWEAR! yes, g-string items for the bride and boxers for the groom, totally uncalled for!!
